SOUTHERN AFRICAN CENTRE FOR INFECTIOUS DISEASE SURVEILLANCE (SACIDS)
BACKGROUND: Southern African Centre for Infectious Disease Surveillance (SACIDS) is a One Health VIRTUAL CENTRE linking southern African academic and research institutions involved with infectious diseases of humans and animals – supported by Sector Ministries, with direct responsibility for public health, animal health and wildlife conservation/health. It works in smart partnership with Centres of Science in industrialised countries, Tanzania National Institute for Medical Research as well as international research centres. The Mission is to improve Africa’s capacity to detect, identify and monitor infectious diseases of humans, animals, ecosystems and their interactions in order to better manage the risk posed by them.
The Centre is looking for a well trained, competent, result oriented, committed, hardworking and self motivated personnel to fill the vacancy of a Communications Manager.
DUTY STATION: Dar es Salaam at the Headquarters of the National Institute for Medical Research
QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE: A Master’s degree in Communication or related disciplines and sound experience of journalism, public relations, marketing and production of promotional materials and publication of not less than three years from a reputable organization. Familiarity with the concepts and usage of social networking applications and virtual learning environments will be an added advantage. Computer literate, editing skills and web-design are essential skills for the post.
MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POST: The officer will be responsible for communications and image development as well as resource mobilization. The roles and responsibilities will include the following:
a)To develop, deliver and monitor SACIDS’s communication and events strategy about the purpose, processes and activities of SACIDS.
b)To develop an image package for SACIDS as a leading One Health Forum and Research Platform in sub-Saharan Africa.
c)To write press releases and articles about SACIDS’s activities, and to strengthen close links between media and appropriate publishing bodies.
d)To take the lead in developing appropriate processes for the dissemination of SACIDS-led project findings and outputs.
e)To develop and maintain a SACIDS style guide for all SACIDS communications and act as brand manager for the SACIDS identity.
f)To promote events and activities through media briefings and e-newsletters to SACIDS’s members and external audiences
g)To manage the communications-related work experience placement scheme for postgraduate students.
h)To assist in developing and managing relationships with donors, international organizations, governments, NGOs and other key stakeholders of SACIDS.
i)To scan sources for funding and advice the SACIDS Directorate and Secretariat as well as Member Institutions of such opportunities.
j)To take the lead in organizing conferences, workshops, video needs related to conferences and launches for SACIDS’s members and external
k)To design, develop, manage, monitor and evaluate the use of SACIDS website, including writing articles, producing audio and video material, and uploading such content, monitoring and evaluating the usage of SACIDS’s website, raising the online profile of SACIDS through social networking platforms
l)To participate in designing a SACIDS Virtual Learning Environment, maintaining editorial control and writing content as required including monitoring discussion groups and other interactive support features.
m)To maintain a roster of key funding agencies
n)To develop or edit proposals for SACIDS resource mobilization
o)To manage ad hoc SACIDS communications projects as appropriate.
p)To undertake other related duties as may be required
The Communication Officer will report to SACIDS Executive Director
