Ownership of 116 Benin Bronzes taken by British forces during the 1897 invasion of Benin City has been officially transferred from the University of Cambridge to Nigeria. The artefacts, stolen in the colonial era and held at Cambridge’s Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, are expected to be physically returned before the end of the year and will be housed in museums in Lagos and Benin City.Nigerian authorities say the return restores dignity, history, and pride lost through colonial violence.
