Tanzanian giants Yanga SC players will receive a massive R3.6 million bonus for their emphatic victory in Sunday’s Kariakoo derby against their arch-rivals, Simba SC.

Yanga SC pummelled a hapless Simba 5-1 at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, the biggest derby defeat in 11 years.

The defending Tanzania champions got their goals through a Maxi Nzengeli double and a goal apiece by Stephane Aziz Ki, Pacome Zouzoua, and Kennedy Musonda.

The club’s president, Engineer Hersi Ally Said, communicated the bonus incentive to the players and staff. He said it was a way of appreciating their efforts and motivating them to continue performing well.

“We always give bonuses to our players for every game. We only pay [the bonus] for a win. We are proud of our players for winning the derby,” Eng Said told FARPost.

“This bonus is a token of our appreciation for their hard work and dedication.”

Kariakoo derby is the biggest rivalry in Tanzanian football. The two teams have been competing for decades, and their matches are always highly anticipated.

Sunday’s win saw the Jangwani giants consolidate their position at the top of the Tanzania Premier League table. It was a significant win for the club, and the players will be motivated by the bonus

Yanga are two points ahead of second-placed Azam FC with 21 points, while Simba remains third with 18 points. Of course, Wekundu Wa Msimbazi have a game in hand over their crosstown rivals.

The Yanga players will receive the bonus in the next few weeks. The bonus is a sign of the growing professionalism of Tanzanian football. The clubs can now offer their players significant financial rewards, helping attract and retain top talent.

Meanwhile, Yanga are on the road for a midweek encounter against Coastal Union on Wednesday in Tanga. Under Argentinian coach, Miguel Gamondi, they will be looking to retain the league title for the third successive season.

The emphatic victory over their bitter rivals must have sent a clear message of intent.
