We Will Kill Again, Says Boko Haram

December 30, 2011 4:46 PM

Boko Haram yesterday reacted formally to the barrage of condemnations against its Christmas Day bombing, insisting that what it did was correct and vowed to carry out more attacks.

The Islamic sect, whose actual name is Jama’atu Ahlissunnah Lidda’awati Wal Jihad, confirmed in a statement issued by its leader Imam Abu-Muhammad Abubakar bin Muhammad Shekau that it was responsible for the December 25 bombing of a church in Madalla, a suburb of Abuja, in which at least 37 people were killed.

Shekau said in the statement written in the Hausa language and e-mailed to media houses by the group’s spokesman Abul Qaqa: “I am informing all Nigerians and the rest of the world that there is no doubt that we committed that act and God’s willing we will carry out further attacks.”

He revealed that the attacks are meant to avenge the “mass killing of Muslims carried out by Christians with the connivance of government” in northern towns like Kaduna, Zonkwa, Langtang, Yelwan Shendam, Jos, Tafawa-Balewa, and Numan, as well as in Shagamu and Ikoyi, Lagos in the south. The latest of such killings, according to the group, took place a few months ago on Eid el-Fitr Day in Jos, the Plateau state capital, during which non-Muslims cannibalised the burnt corpses of victims.

“We swear by Allah that we will avenge any form of injustice committed, being committed or to be committed against Muslims. This is just the beginning,” Shekau vowed.

The group also questioned the stance taken by Muslim leaders and traditional rulers who condemned the Christmas Day killings, saying they have no right to decide what Islam preaches on the responsibility of Muslim activists.

According to it, “the so-called Muslim leaders” should know that God, in the Qur’an (2:194) urges Muslims to avenge any transgression committed against them by non-Muslims. It also referred the Sultan of Sokoto, whom it derisively called “Emir of Sokoto,” to Qur’anic chapters and verses 2:190-194; 9::36, and 22:39-41, as well as the 134th Tradition in Sahih Muslim on the concept of jihad or holy war.

Shekau challenged the Muslim leaders to tell Nigerians why they did not condemn the Eid el-Fitr Day killings in Jos, which was documented on video, as well as the alternative way of avenging the killings since they found the Boko Haram way unacceptable.

The militant leader also denied the insinuations allegedly made in some quarters that a former minister of information, Prof. Jerry Gana, and secretary-general of the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in the 19 Northern States and Abuja, Elder Sa’idu Dogo, were sponsors of the group, asking rhetorically, “Is this, then, the job they sponsored us to carry out?”

Boko Haram Spokesman Threatens Nigeria Christians, Troops

by Naharnet Newsdesk

A purported spokesman for Nigerian Islamist group Boko Haram has issued an ultimatum to Christians in the country's north and threatened to confront troops after the president declared a state of emergency in hard hit areas.

Abul Qaqa, who has spoken on behalf of the group blamed for scores of attacks in Africa's most populous nation numerous times in the past, said he was giving southerners living in the north a three-day ultimatum to leave.

"We find it pertinent to state that soldiers will only kill innocent Muslims in the local government areas where the state of emergency was declared," he told journalists in a phone conference late Sunday.

"We would confront them squarely to protect our brothers."

Speaking in the Hausa language common throughout the north, Qaqa said "we also wish to call on our fellow Muslims to come back to the north because we have evidence that they would be attacked.

"We are also giving a three-day ultimatum to the southerners living in the northern part of Nigeria to move away."

Boko Haram is believed to include different factions with varying aims, its structure remains unclear and other people have claimed to speak on its behalf. Nigeria's 160 million population is roughly divided between a mainly Muslim north and predominately Christian south.

Muslims have been victims of Boko Haram attacks, but a wave of Christmas day bombings particularly targeting churches set off fears of retaliation from Christians. President Goodluck Jonathan declared a state of emergency on Saturday in parts of four states hard hit by violence blamed on Boko Haram.

The declaration came in response to scores of attacks attributed to Boko Haram, particularly the bombings on Christmas that killed 49 people, most of them in a gruesome blast at a Catholic church as services were ending.

Qaqa also criticized Jonathan over his visit to a Catholic church outside Abuja on Saturday. The church was the site of the bloodiest Christmas day attack, with an explosion killing 44 people there as services were ending.

"The President had never visited any of the theatres were Muslims were massacred,"
he said, naming areas where scores of Muslims were killed in post-election riots in April.

Anger rises as Nigeria fuel prices soar

02 Jan 2012 21:34
Labour unions threaten to paralyse the country with protests and strikes over government measure to halt fuel subsidies.

Labour unions in Nigeria have threatened to paralyse the country with mass protests and strikes as the price of petrol skyrocketed, a day after the government announced an end to fuel subsidies.

Queues grew at petrol stations on Monday in the capital, Abuja, and in the city of Lagos, where angry motorists paid more than twice the usual price for fuel. Sign posts at a few gas stations put the price at nearly 94 cents per litre, up from about 45 cents per litre on Sunday.

Many more stations were shut down, while bus and taxi fares had already risen.

"They want to kill the masses,'' Mensong Mensong, 33, a motorcycle-taxi driver waiting for his turn amid a cluster of motorcycles, told the Associated Press news agency.

"They are deceiving us here in the name of governing us."

Nigerian regulators announced the start of the deeply controversial measure to remove fuel subsidies on Sunday, with labour unions warning of protests across Africa's most populous nation and largest oil producer.

Economists and government officials' view removing the subsidy as essential to allow for more spending on the country's woefully inadequate infrastructure and to ease pressure on its foreign reserves.

Nigerians, however, see the subsidy as their only benefit from the nation's oil wealth. Al Jazeera's Ahmed Idris, reporting from Abuja, said reports from around the country spoke of a hike in the cost of public transport and basic necessities, such as food.

BREAKING: Nigerian Government Planning To Shutdown BlackBerry Services Over Pro-Subsidy Protests
Monday, January 2, 2012

Due to the ease at which protests are organised via BlackBerry Messenger and Social Networks(Twitter and Facebook), reports say the Nigerian Government has called on Network Providers to shutdown their BlackBerry Internet Service tomorrow. Recall the Egyptian revolution.

However, blaming technology won’t solve the problem. Besides, the number of BlackBerry users in the country crossed a million in the first half of 2011. Of that Million, Only about 50% of BlackBerry users actually pay for BIS. Even if all BlackBerry users pay for BIS, there are still about 150 million Nigerians involved.

Shutting down BIS won’t solve any problem, says Binjo who runs a blog http://upnepa.blogspot.com

Police: 20 killed in northeast Nigeria shooting

MAIDUGURI, Nigeria (AP) -- Police say gunmen from a radical Muslim sect have attacked a town hall in rural northeast Nigeria, shooting at least 20 people dead. The attack happened around noon Friday in Mubi in Adamawa state, a town near Nigeria's border with Cameroon.

Local police commissioner Ade T. Shinaba said the attack targeted the hall when a group of Nigeria's Igbo people of the southeast were meeting. Shinaba blamed a radical Muslim sect known as Boko Haram for the killing.

The sect, which wants to implement strict Shariah law across Nigeria, killed at least 510 people last year alone, according to an Associated Press count.
