Iran oil tankers change names as EU ban looms

Iran has given new English names and changed the flags of many of its oil tankers, two of which are steaming towards Europe with an European Union ban on Iranian oil imports just a week away, ship tracking data shows.

The Haraz is now Freedom, Nesa has transformed into Truth, and Sima has become Blossom. At least a third of oil tanker operator National Iranian Tanker Company's (NITC) ships have registered with the pacific atolls of Tuvalu and also Tanzania after dropping their Maltese and Cypriot flags.

NITC is not subject to UN sanctions, but with Malta and Cyprus coming under increased EU pressure to stop flagging Iranian government-linked ships, NITC has hoisted flags from Tuvalu on at least 11 of its 39 oil tankers, while Tanzanian flags fly above at least two.

Merchant ships need a flag from national ship registries to gain access to most of the world's ports.
According to ship tracking data on Reuters, two of the tankers, now called Pioneer and Elite, were heading through the Red Sea towards Europe on Sunday, where a ban on buying Iranian oil comes into effect on July 1. NITC declined to comment.

UN-sanctioned sister company the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Lines frequently changes the names of its cargo vessels in an attempt to conceal their connection to IRISL, which Washington and the EU suspect helps transport military equipment for Iran.

Only three of the 15 NITC vessels whose onboard ship position transmitters are showing as switched on have not changed their names yet, according to the Reuters Freight Fundamentals Database.

Inabidi kama serikali waache utegemezi maana sasa sijui watapata wapi misaada, na kama kweli itatokea hivyo, basi hata bajeti ambayo inategemea wahsani haitatekelezeka.

USA KILLS KENYA OIL DEAL

Kenya, under pressure from the US and in the midst of security concerns, has cancelled an oil deal with Iran.

The Nation learnt on Wednesday that a meeting held at the Office of the President decided that the MoU with Iran for the annual purchase of oil annually should be cancelled.

The official reason, according to Energy Permanent Secretary Patrick Nyoike, was that the deal was not favourable, because it did not come with any price discount and Iran was only allowing a 90-day credit period.

Official feeling was also that this was not the first time that the government had signed such a deal with Iran, with no success.

According to government sources, the agreement was first signed in 2009 and then in 2010 but both agreements lapsed since Kenya could not find a bank to secure the deal.

However, the more immediate reason appears to pressure by western governments, particularly the US.

"There is an embargo on Iranian oil. We don't want to get involved in the intricacies of international inter-governmental issues," Mr Nyoike was quoted by Reuters.

This is the latest development in a series of events which have put Kenya in the middle of the conflict between the West and Iran.

In Nairobi, outgoing US ambassador Scott Gration said Kenya could face sanctions over its relations with Iran.

Speaking after US Independence Day celebrations at his residence, Mr Gration said that although there was no official communication on the issue, the matter would be handled "at the appropriate time."

"Certainly there are sanctions, there will be repercussions ... there are sanctions for people that are buying oil and products from Iran and we will have to deal with those as they emerge," said Mr Gration.

Kenya hamkushirikishwa kufanya maamuzi haya! leo kimbelembele kuvunja muafaka ambao ungewasaidia kwa sababu ya ahadi za Marekani who wants Irans Oil by all means. Inakusaidia nini wewe Mkenya!..Mnarudi kule kule hamjui mnachokifanya maana Marekani wana embargo na Cuba pia vunjeni basi uhusiano na Cuba. Sasa matatizo kama haya ndio yatakayo ivunja tena EAC kwa sababu sisi tutapinga kuendeshwa Kenya watapingana nasi kama ilivyokuwa mwaka 1967 baada ya sisi kuwa Wajamaa wakashinikizwa kutuburuza tukavunja muungano..
 
vikwazo vitatupa akili. Kazi yao kufanya anasa na si kujenga nchi. Wangelijenga toka enzi hzo na sisi tungejua tunafanya nin.
 
Siku moja jioni nilikuwa nikiangalia televisheni nikaona mbunge mmoja anachangia kwamba hata tukiwapa bendera yetu kuitumia kuna ubaya kwani na sisi ni watanzania tuna haki ya kutumia bendera ya Tanzania. Sikuelewa vizuri. Leo nimeelewa sasa.
