Iran has seized two oil tankers allegedly carrying smuggled fuel in the Gulf and arrested their crews, state television announced on Friday.

"The Revolutionary Guards naval forces seized two ships over the course of the last two days," state television said, citing Mohammad-Sharif Shirali, a Guards commander.

"The seized tankers... flying the flags of Panama and Tanzania were transporting more than 1.5 million litres (400,000 gallons) of Iranian oil and gas," he said.

"The Guards escorted the confiscated ships to the port of Mahshahr" in the country's southwest, Shirali said.

"Thirty-seven crew members were handed over to judicial authorities in Mahshahr," he added.

In recent weeks, the US military has intensified its presence in the Gulf, accusing Iran of seizing vessels, or attempting to, in this shipping lane that is strategic to global trade.

On July 6, the US military said the Guards had seized a commercial ship in the Gulf, one day after having accused Iranian forces of carrying out two similar attempts off the coast of Oman.

Tehran said the intercepted ship had been transporting more than one million litres of "smuggled fuel".

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) naval forces have seized two foreign tankers smuggling fuel in the Persian Gulf over the past two days, Iranian media quoted an official as saying on 15 September.

“The Deputy Commander of IRGC's third marine zone reported the seizure of two foreign oil tankers carrying smuggled fuel and the discovery of more than 1.5 million liters of fuel,” Iran’s semi-official Mehr news outlet reported.

“Two oil tankers carrying smuggled oil with Panama and Tanzanian flags were seized by the IRGC Navy … 37 crew members of the two vessels were handed over to the judicial authorities to pass the legal procedures,” the agency quoted IRGC Admiral Mohammad-Sharif Shirali as saying one day earlier.

The tankers have been identified as the Panama and Tanzania-flagged Stephen and Crown vessels.

The IRGC navy “guide the seized tankers to Bandar-e Mahshahr and Arvand base” before detaining the crew members, Shirali added, according to Press TV.

IRGC naval forces have been “vigilantly” tracking “all illegal moves by foreign commercial and military vessels,” he said.

Iranian naval forces have reportedly confiscated over 50 million liters of smuggled fuel since last year, Fars News Agency reported in 2023.

Iran has been stepping up its anti-fuel smuggling operations in the Persian Gulf over recent years, seizing several vessels, much to Washington's chagrin. Tehran has also accused the US Navy of protecting fuel smugglers.

In one incident in early July, US forces interfered to prevent an Iranian naval force from capturing a vessel involved in smuggling.

Harsh US sanctions on Iranian energy exacerbate fuel smuggling in the Gulf. Additionally, Washington has illegally plundered several shipments of Iranian oil at sea over the past few years, while accusing Tehran of attempting to “hijack” foreign vessels.

On a number of occasions, foreign tankers have collided with Iranian vessels before attempting to flee in disregard of international maritime regulations.

As a result of such actions, Iran recently announced its willingness to establish a maritime security belt with fellow member states of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO).

Shitty countries (that’s the third world) according to Donald Trump; you can’t blame him if you are going to read such below par news articles.

Serikali inabidi ianze kupeleka vijana waliofaulu on merit from A-level (scrutinising potential candidates back to their early education) in-order to certify their ability za kwenda nje ya nchi.

It’s just pathetic kusoma habari za jumla jumla kama hizi, zinaonyesha uwezo mdogo wa mwandishi wa citizens on dissecting the necessary information pertaining the importance of local contexts importance. What does a panama ship got to do with Tanzanian issues.

If you read the article it doesn’t focus on local concerns related to the Tanzanian audience pertaining the saga. For instance what cargo was the Tanzanian flagged ship carrying (oil or gas) because Iran exports both of the commodities or where was destination.

Were the commodities refined or not to anticipate their destination; mind you they were seized near Iran. Thus they could be heading anywhere in the world depending on the final product.

How did those ships manage to board those commodities (what’s going on in, Iran) how is it possible to load such commodities only later to be detained by the security forces of the nation.

Question follows if the ships cargo was attained illegally, is corruption rampant to that extent in Iran, how did a Tanzanian ship got involved in this whole mess, were the commodities refined or not tells if Tanzania could import the cargo and so on.

Personal majibu yote hayo nimeyapata baada ya research, but then a news article ought to offer that info for its audience.

Hata humu JF watu kuandika habari awawezi kabisa (on what is required contextually).

Grammar is just five
5% on academic writing, which is an issue of concern in Tanzania; kwa uelewa wasomi wetu. But then structure, analysis and evaluation which are the main issue kwa nchi za wenzetu; kwa critics wa JF hayo mambo yapo juu ya uwezo wao.

Just pathetic, pelekeni watoto ulaya kusoma; wajifunze namna ya kuandika.

Kwa sababu writers are usually experts if and if not they do understand how to present an investigated article.

Hata from four kwa uandishi huo, nchi za wenzetu hiyo ni failure article; it’s a just stupid article which doesn’t offer a perspective.
