A COUPLE was found dead in their house at Boko Basihaya area in Kinondoni District on Sunday after allegedly committing suicide.

The Kinondoni Regional Police Commander (RPC) Charles Kenyela, said in Dar es Salaam on Monday that the remains of the couple were discovered at around 6am in their room.

The RPC named the deceased as Nicholaus Maleko (43), a businessman and Catherine George (25), a College of Business Education (CBE) student.

Mr Kenyela said police were informed about the incident by Maleko's sons, Msanje (20) and Kwilime (21), who had to break the door after they heard a strange sound emanating from their parents' room.

"According to the sons, the strange sound frightened them and when they entered the room, they found that their father was unconscious while their step mother had already died," the RPC said.

He said Maleko died minutes after he was rushed to MICO Hospital in Tegeta area. A nail on a packet of rat poison and bottles of alcoholic drinks were recovered in their room.

The RPC said the bodies were preserved at Mwananyamala Hospital, while police were conducting investigations to establish the cause of the couple's death.

MYSTERIOUS death of a couple at their home in Boko Basihaya in Dar es Salaam on Monday, was caused by misunderstandings between them and the man's threat to breakup the relationship, police and family sources said on Tuesday.

The Kinondoni Regional Police Commander (RPC), Mr Charles Kenyela, on Tuesday named the deceased as Nicholaus Maleko (43), a businessman and Catherine George (25). The bodies of the couple were found in their room at around 6:00am.

Sources told the 'Daily News' on Tuesday that the couple lived together for six months since January, but were not married. They said the man had recently threatened to ditch the woman.

One of Catherine's friends told the 'Daily News' that the man had threatened to leave her.
"She also said that the man had refused to share part of his wealth with her and Catherine was heard telling people of plans to commit suicide," said one of Catherine's friends on condition of anonymity.

Catherine worked with Salamanda Video Library along Samora Avenue between 2007 and December, last year as a shopkeeper.

"She was a good girl but in her last days in office she developed a bad drinking habit and I decided to fire her," said the Library's owner, Mr Clarence Mponda.

Mr Mponda further noted that in January, this year, Catherine phoned him, saying that a man has approached her, bought her a car, a house and that they were looking forward to get married.

"It is just two weeks ago when Catherine met my wife at ChagaBite Bar in Kijitonyama area in Kinondoni District. Catherine told my wife that she was looking for an agent of M-Pesa. I was shocked this morning when I heard that she has died," he said.

At the deceased's home in Boko Basihaya, Maleko's sons, Msanje (20) and Kwilime (21) said that they did not notice any signs of misunderstandings between their parents and that the incident came as a surprise to them.

"We knew our step mother since January, this year, we cannot say much about her private life with our father but they lived well," said Kwilime.

The son also said that in the deceased's house, they found a bottle of Serengeti beer, a can of energy drink-Red Bull, two glasses and packets of mice poison.

We suspect one of them must have mixed the poison with the drinks," he said.

According to Msanje, their father is survived by four sons namely, Mkunde (25), Kwilime (21), Msanje (20) and Ndesanjo (17). All the sons are said to have shared the father but were from different mothers.

Meanwhile, officials at the College of Business Education (CBE) said they were not aware of the death.

The college's Acting Principal Prof Ahmed Athuman and the CBE Student Organization's President, Mr Gango Kidera, said that they were not informed about the death of any of their students.

"Many girls and boys feel proud to introduce themselves as CBE students, therefore it is difficult to prove that she was our student. If she was one of us the information must have reached us by now," he said.

Mr Mponda, however, said that Catherine used to attend evening classes at CBE, but dropped out towards the end of last year.
