Pope Francis makes it clear that he does not value theological precision and thinks there is something wrong with those who do. Due to his lack of precision, he is constantly making ambiguous statements. They are open to an orthodox interpretation, but can also be understood in a way that conflicts with previous teaching. Typically the media picks up and publicizes the latter interpretation.

This pattern has lead to massive confusion among Catholics and others. Many people are left thinking that the Pope teaches something different than earlier teaching. Some see this as a good thing. Some see it as a bad thing. But it is always bad for our faith if we think that doctrine is dependent on the whim of a pope.

I have known many people who are impatient with what they see as quibbling over words. In general, it is not necessarily a bad quality. But a position like the papacy requires as much clarity as possible
