Astronomers detect 'monster star'

The most massive star ever, which is up to 20 million times brighter than the Sun, has been discovered using the Very Large Telescope in Chile, scientists in Britain said.

The star, named R136a1, is thought to have started off with a mass of up to 320 times that of the Sun and the new discovery has doubled the previously accepted limit of solar mass.

Star R136a1 is in a dense cluster of stars 165,000 light years from earth


Although it has since shed some of its weight, it is so powerful that if it replaced the Sun as the centre of our solar system, it would make life on Earth impossible because of the strength of its ultraviolet radiation.

R136a1 was discovered as part of a series of massive stars found in two young star clusters by a team of astronomers led by Professor Paul Crowther of Sheffield University in northern England.

"Unlike humans, these stars are born heavy and lose weight as they age," Crowther said.

"Being a little over a million years old, the most extreme star R136a1 is already middle-aged and has undergone an intense weight loss programme, shedding a fifth of its initial mass over that time, or more than 50 solar masses.

"Owing to the rarity of these monsters, I think it is unlikely that this new record will be broken any time soon."

Crowther added that astronomers faced a challenge to work out how the stars originated.

"Either they were born so big or smaller stars merged together to produce them," he said.

The Very Large Telescope project, in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile, is operated by the European Southern Observatory (ESO).

It features four eight-metre diameter telescopes and is described by the ESO as "the world's biggest eye on the sky".

Researchers studied the stars using it plus data from the NASA/European Space Agency's Hubble Space Telescope.

The research, conducted by scientists from Britain, Malaysia and Germany, was published in scientific journal The Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.

ni great discovery,that shows that there are lot to be found such minerals,treasures ,lost cities,etcanyway let be a chalenge to us.

Naona kuna chumvi katika baadhi ya vumbuzi zao ingawa baadhi naamiini kweli.
 
kama sikosei mapping ya galaxies wametumia "cluster analysis (fuzzy cluster analys)" . Kwa kutumia mathematical formulars zake, unaweza kuunda cluster ya vitu once unapojua relation baina ya vitu vichache ndani ya hiyo cluster.

sijui kiudeep inakuwaje (kama wapo wataalamu watufunze), but najua katika ku map clusters u dont need to know everything in the cluster, a few properties of some points in a cluster can lead u to the shape and approximate location of all points in a cluster

Tukikokotoa manake 1 light year ni sawa na (jumla ya sekunde ktk mwaka ) zidisha kwa (mwendokasi wa mwanga) , hesabu inayokaribia 9.5 X 10 ^ 12 km, this figure is ridiculously large hata kitarakimu na kimantiki ndio maana wataalamu wakaamua kuifupisha na kuiita light years, kuwakilisha mantiki mbili za muda na umbali wa mwanga kwa wakati mmoja.

Kwa hiyo basi,kuelezea hiyo kadhia ya 100 light years , manake tukichukulia nyota X imerusha hiyo miale leo hii, ikichukuliwa miale kwamba inasafiri kwa mwendokasi sawa na wa mwanga inamaana miale ile itaifikia sayari yetu baada ya miaka 100!! We all be probably dead isn't it??

In other words, kwa kuwa nyota hii inakisiwa kuwa light years 165,000 kutoka hapa duniani, basi hata mwanga inaotoa unaotufikia leo ulitoka katika hiyo nyota miaka 165,000 iliyopita. Given that nyota kubwa zina life span ndogo (tushukuru jua letu si kubwa sana) it is quite possible kwamba hii nyota ilishajiunguza completely zamani sana.

Wanasayansi wengine wanasema haiwezekani kwa nyota kubwa hivi kuumbika kikawaida na wana theory kwamba hizi ni nyota mbili zilizoungana.

Wenyewe wanasema kila inapotokea hivyo basi, ulimwengu hupatwa na mabadiliko makubwa! (hapa mabadiliko hawakusema maangamizi kama movie ya 2012 - yeye aliamua kufanya hivyo kama sehemu ya biashara).
