Ally Yusufu Mugenzi is a Rwandan from the village of Ndatemwa. He works in the Great Lakes Section of the BBC World Service.
BBC Great Lakes started as a Lifeline Project reuniting people who had gone missing due to the war in Rwanda.

Ally, who was working as a stringer for BBC Kiswahili Service for four years leading up to the genocide, is a Hutu, but he has Tutsi in his family tree.His great grandfather was from Pakistan, which contributed to the way Ally looked - a slim 62-kg man, with a pointed nose and soft hair.
He was always mistaken for a Tutsi to the extent that it almost cost him his life.He would always carry an identity card confirming that he was a Hutu, but all the time he felt betrayed by his appearance.

One day in 1991, he was travelling with other journalists from the north of Rwanda, where they had been covering the massacre of the Tutsis.
A Hutu soldier stopped them at a river roadblock.Every one had to get out of the vehicle and hold up their identity card.When the soldier saw Ally, he was not interested in looking at the identity card, but instead he told him to take off his shirt.He then ordered him to turn left and right and back again.To him, Ally was a Tutsi soldier.
The journalist feared for his life, but eventually the soldier looked at his identity card and let him put his clothes on again.

Life was not easy in the four years Ally reported for the BBC during the civil war that preceded the genocide.He made friends and enemies.
He lived in the Biryogo area in Kigali.Due to the night killings of the people suspected to be supporters of the Tutsi rebels, he had to fortify his bedroom before going to bed.He would use iron sheets and slabs to strengthen windows.
Ally lived in perpetual fear for four years.There was a time when the followers of the ruling party, MRND, fought with the opposition.Four people were killed and a small office of the opposition party was burnt.

Two hours after he filed this report, a relative came to warn him that he might be attacked by the militia of the ruling party.Ally did not take him seriously, but later, a journalist colleague advised him to apologise to the head of the militia.He had to apologise to avert any danger.This is just one of many examples of how Ally was living until he left for London.
In 2003, the vehicle he was travelling in was stopped in the Ruhengeri area.The head of a Hutu militia approached the vehicle and looked at everyone's faces.
He looked directly at Ally and ordered him out.His colleagues asked why and the militiaman said locals wanted to talk to him.Fortunately, he was saved by a soldier travelling in the opposite direction.

Ally travelled to London just a month before the genocide.He left his wife and children behind, but they were expected to join him after he had settled in.When the genocide started on April 7, 1994, Ally's wife was in Kigali preparing to send documents by DHL so that her husband could begin the process of transferring her and the rest of the family to England.
She later fled to Congo, then Burundi and ended up in Tanzania with their two-year-old son.

Ally's nine-year-old daughter was kept by a friend and then hidden in the Tanzanian embassy.
Ally also left behind three sisters and many nieces and nephews.They fled the village after their houses were attacked by Hutu militias on suspicion that they were supporting the RPF Tutsis.
Ally's three sisters and children travelled on foot for more than two weeks to safety.
