In what has come to signal a growing rift between Prime Minisiter Netanyahu and President Obama, the latest controversy is the intended address of Prime Minister Netanyahu in both houses of representative in Washington DC on the March 3rd 2015.

Netanyahu and House Speaker John Boehner came under fire when it was revealed that Boehner did invite Netanyahu to address both houses of Congress, without informing the Obama administration. In our own situation in Tanzania is like Speaker Anna Makinda inviting Paul Kagame/Salva Kiir/ Uhuru Kenyata to address parliament without informing the State house (President Kikwete's office).

As a response to this uncomfortable position which the Obama administration regards as breach of protocol the Vice president's (Joe Bidden) office has already announced that the Vice president will not attend this address. Further, dozens of representatives from the Democratic Party have also announced that they will not be attending. These development risk making the whole event seem like a Republican party's activity hence diluting its importance.

Prime Minister Netanyahu however has remained adamant that this address is needed to stop a potentially bad deal between the US (plus five others) and Iran on the freezing of Iran's nuclear programme. The Obama administration views it differently, that the move is an effort by Netanyahu to boost his public standing in the forthcoming Israel election irrespective of breach of protocol.

The latest twist in this whole saga is that an increasing number of prominent Jewish and Israel support groups are now urging Netanyahu to cancel the intended address and stay home as they find the whole move to be ill-advised and it is only antagonizing the US administration. There has not been any positive response from Netanyahu.

One needs to ask oneself therefore that could it be possible that the Israeli Prime Minister and speaker Boehner had miscalculated potential fallout from this arrangement? On that basis will it be sensible for Netanyahu to cancel the move and STAY HOME?

In my view this is one of his attempt to salvage his popularity back home. He has proved to be lame Israel PM, the reason why he is still a Primier is because ultra orthodox, racist and right wing parties supports him. The speech will help him retain that base, otherwise come March the likilihood that he will kiss the premiership goodbye is very high.

  • He won't cancel it because Bibi is one of the most arrogant men in the world. He was enabled by Boehner but he is already throwing Boehner under the bus.
