Celebrating Tiger's 10

On Thursday, Tiger Woods will tee it up in his 11th Masters as a professional. His first 10 were nothing short of spectacular and were rivaled only by Jack Nicklaus. Here we take a look back on Tiger's incredible record at Augusta National.
Just as the man himself has undergone an almost mythical tranformation, so, too, has the game he has come to dominate. Since Tiger Woods burst onto the scene with a dominatiung performance never before seen in a major championship, golf has become cool, technology has changed and tournament purses have exploded. We can only imagine what the next 10 years will bring.

The best is still to come from Tiger. Hopefully we will raise Tigers in Bongo if these leaders who steal with impunity can see some sanity and develop more sports like this.

Tiger Woods endured a few anxious moments but retained his PGA Championship lead to win the event for the fourth time.

Woods shot an 8-under 272 at the sweltering Southern Hills in Tulsa, Okla., giving him a two-shot win over Woody Austin. Woods shot one-under in the final round, sealing his win with a short par putt.

(Jamie Squire/Getty Images) Woods, 31, won the PGA title for the second consecutive year, having also won it in 1999 and 2000.

He has won 13 majors in his career, and now trails only Jack Nicklaus, who won 18 majors. Nicklaus won his 13th major at the age of 35.

Woods used a sizzling round of 63 on Friday — tying him with 21 others for the best round in a major — to put him in the comfortable position of starting the final round atop the leaderboard.

Woods is now 13-0 when entering the final round of a major with at least a share of the lead, but he was tested after initially appearing on his way to a dominant win on Sunday.

The world No. 1 pumped his fist after making a birdie putt on the eighth hole, a fourth birdie of the day to put him five shots up. Woods led by three shots after Saturday.

But he made two bogeys in the next five holes, punctuated by missing a five-foot putt on the 14th hole. With a surging Austin making his third consecutive birdie on 13, the lead briefly narrowed to a single stroke.

Austin, 42, was not able to go under par on the next four holes, and hit a bad tee shot on the 18th.

The resident of nearby Kansas City salvaged par on the final hole to finish at 274, 6-under. It was his first career top ten at a major.

Strong early bid
Ernie Els of South Africa made a strong early bid to vie for his first PGA title and fourth major. Els had four birdies after 10 holes, but bogeyed twice on the back nine.

Els finished with a 5-under 275, good for third place. His round of 4-under on Sunday was surpassed only by Briton Simon Dyson.

Calgary's Stephen Ames, in second after three rounds, faltered badly on Sunday. After rounds of 68, 69, and 69, Ames had nine bogeys and just two birdies in the final round.

Ames finished with a 2-over 282, tied for 12th with a pack of golfers that included South Korea's K.J. Choi and Stuart Appleby of Australia.

American Arron Oberholser and John Senden of Australia, who both shot a round of one-over, were the only other golfers under par for the tournament.

Phil Mickelson finished 6-over for the tournament. The big left-hander had won a major in each of the last three years, but will be shut out for 2007.

Dyson's 6-under 64 for the day brought him to even after 72 holes, tied for sixth with Australia's Geoff Ogilvie and Trevor Immelman of South Africa.

With 13th major title, Woods exceeds his own expectations

Even Tiger Woods can't believe how much he's accomplished at this point in his career. But his fourth PGA Championship victory Sunday at Southern Hills will always be special to him, he said, because it's the first major he's won since daughter Sam's arrival.
