Three UN peacekeepers abducted in DR Congo

A UN source says three members of the United Nations' peacekeeping mission in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, also known as MONUSCO, have been abducted in the eastern portion of the country.

The source, whose name was not mentioned in the report, said the MONUSCO peacekeepers were kidnapped in the town of Kibumba, about 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Goma, the provincial capital of North Kivu, on Thursday.

MONUSCO is a 20,000-strong force tasked with a stabilization mission in the African country.

Two Congolese members of a demining team were among the abducted people.

The Congolese army said a vehicle was spotted near the border with Rwanda at the location where the kidnapping presumably took place. The car was empty with its engine running.

Earlier this week, the UN called on the DR Congo to respect the civil liberties of its citizens and provide political space for the opposition amid increasing tensions ahead of elections scheduled to be held next year.

The mineral-rich country has been struggling since President Joseph Kabila's controversial 2011 re-election, which is said to have been marked with voting irregularities.

The nation has been through two wars since Kabila came to power back in 2001.

Kidnapped trio in DR Congo are not UN Personnel
Three men kidnapped in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo work for a specialised private firm subcontracted by the UN anti-mine service, the UN mission in the country said Friday.

"These are not UN personnel, they are private agents employed by a private company hired by (the UN Mine Action Service) UNMAS," Charles Bambara, information director at the mission in the Congo (MONUSCO) told AFP.

Nobody has claimed responsibility for Thursday's abduction of the three men at Kibumba in North Kivu province, where a Congolese army officer said his troops had found an abandoned MONUSCO car with markings of the local UN demining team, known as UN-MAG.

"The motor was running and the car was empty. Apparently those inside were kidnapped," added the officer, who asked not to be named.

A UN official on Thursday told AFP that "three agents of MONUSCO ... were kidnapped at Kibumba," 30 miles (19 miles) north of Goma, the provincial capital. The men were identified as two Congolese and one foreigner.

UN-MAG is responsible for disarming mines and defusing other unexploded weaponry in North Kivu, which has been wracked by conflict for more than 20 years and is a base for rebels and other armed groups.

mhh??? jMali umerudishwa kazini? unabahati kweli na kazi za uzushi!!! anyway, I hope this time Congolese will show us some videos or at least pictures of the "Rwandan-invaders" as a prove and not blabla like always because last time I checked most people in DRC particularly in Goma had smart-phones
