The National Unity Platform declaration as Uganda gears to the 2026 Elections

Parliament recently amended the Political Parties and Organisations Act to make it mandatory for all political parties to belong either to the Inter-Party Organisation for Dialogue (IPOD) or the Forum for Non-Represented Political Parties. The two organs were made departments under the National Consultative Forum where the National Unity Platform is an active member and Deputy Chairperson.

The National Unity Platform filed a petition before the Constitutional Court challenging the content and process by which the amendment was made. Most importantly, no political party was consulted in amending this law, and everyone could see that it was meant to target the National Unity Platform. Already, the Electoral Commission is using this law to discriminate against and cripple the operations of the National Unity Platform!

As we await the decision of the Constitutional Court, the National Unity Platform has decided to sign the current Memorandum of Understanding since it is already a member of the applicable constitutive organ by conscription of the law.

We hope and shall be demanding for a quick determination of the Constitutional Petition to guide us on the way forward.

UNPACKING our Manifesto

Priority One:

In our 2026-2031 manifesto, priority one points to the restoration of freedom, constitutionalism, and Human rights. These aspects have been abused by the repressive regime in power which has severally undermined dissenting voices. There are dozens of citizens who are unaccountable for as they remain held incommunicado in safe houses for years, some thrown in prisons on trumped up charges, others disappeared never to be seen again or killed.

Constitutionalism. The element of constitutionalism has been undermined by the incumbent regime which has used coercive and manipulative tactics to undermine the voices of the masses as case happened previously in the amendment of article 102(b) in 2017, and the most recent coffee bill which saw security operatives lay siege on parliament to suppress any dissenting voices. If legislators are not manipulated by cash offers to decide in favor of the regime while passing draconian laws, coercion is deployed to silence the dissenting voices in parliament. The ugly scenarios of military mambas demonstrating broad daylight partisanship was evident in the Kawempe North by-election. The NUP seeks to restore constitutional democracy where the military shall not be involved in partisan politics. Holding people in prisons without trial for years and using military courts to persecute political dissent is what NUP seeks to revoke and restore constitutional order.

The Human rights aspect is also prominent in our priority area one. There are multiple examples of rights violations by the regime in power. The torture testimonies by abductees, congestion in prisons and the silence of rights bodies like the UHRC which is mandated to check the regime championed rights abuses. In our NEW UGANDA we envision having a fully fledged independent functional Human Rights body that will leave no stone unturned while holding violators to account regardless of their ranks in the military hierarchy.

What are the chances for NUP to win presidency or more parliament seats. I used to think Uganda is dictatorial however at least you have opposition mps and can participate in elections. In Tanzania the main opposition party doesn't have MPs for at least 5 years now and since its not partaking in the current general election meaning for 10 years we won't have opposition MPs.

How we wish for a Ugandan "democracy".

Today we resumed our presidential campaign trail with Butebo and Budaka districts in Eastern Uganda where we preached our revolutionary message of regime change to the masses.

Just like all places we have traversed, Butebo and Budaka districts grapple with a span of challenges like the poor road network, dire economic condition, high unemployment rates, and rampant school drop out rates. We pledged to address all this in line with our 11 point manifesto.
