The Tanzania Police Force has announced a ban on demonstrations said to be planned for December 9, 2025, arguing that they do not meet the legal requirements for approval.
Police say no District Police Commissioner has received any formal notification or letter requesting permission for the protests to take place.
The move comes after social media posts began circulating calling for nationwide peaceful gatherings without limits.
On December 2, 2025 authorities listed twelve issues they claim are being mobilised online ahead of the date, cautioning organisers and promoters to stop any actions that could threaten public order or risk facing legal measures.
The police’s continued reminders for citizens to avoid activities that could disrupt peace follow President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s recent national address, where she stressed that the government is always prepared to respond to criminal behaviour.
