The Tanzania People's Defence Force (TPDF) will become a smaller, but more sophisticated force, according to President Jakaya Kikwete.
Speaking on 6 September during a ceremony marking the 50th anniversary of the TPDF, Kikwete said: "Our army has recorded great achievements in the past five decades, but as time goes by new security challenges seem to emerge.
These include terrorism, piracy and cyber crimes, calling for new approaches and fresh methods of operations."
He went on to say that TPDF would see its personnel numbers reduced, while at the same time receiving more advanced weapons and equipment.
"We are also in the process of acquiring modern air force equipment, including attack helicopters, modern aircrafts and other high-tech gear to ensure improved efficiency in all domestic and international military undertakings
