Kiliba: Let Us Obey and Pray for President Samia
Speaking to the press today, December 14, 2025, the President of the Tanzania Higher Learning Institutions Students' Organization (TAHLISO), Geofrey Kiliba, urged Tanzanians to support President Samia and other national leaders. He emphasized that this is both a civic duty and a scriptural command. He stated that according to the Christian faith, obeying authority is a command from God and a foundation for maintaining peace, prosperity, and national development. He added that online and offline activism should adhere to the principles of peace, love, and national unity. He stressed that activism that does not follow these principles creates fear, hatred, and divides the nation instead of building it.
Regarding the events of October 29 and the days that followed, Kiliba questioned whether the strategies and methods used by activists provided solutions to the citizens' challenges or only added more problems. He advised the public to identify and name the originators of those strategies, which he claimed led to civilian deaths, significant losses, and the division of citizens along religious and political lines.
Public Opinion:
Many have stated that they view the declarations being made by prominent individuals, including politicians—especially from the CCM party—as a tactic to shift blame onto activists for the events that occurred during the election and to whitewash the Government, which should actually be held accountable. Citizens said they are not easily deceived because they witnessed everything that happened, and that they protested against human rights violations and were not paid, as alleged.
Furthermore, others stated that no citizen can obey an authority that kills its own people or a Government that evades accountability when it errs.
President Samia Sends Message to UN Secretary-General, António Guterres
The Government, through the Minister of Foreign Affairs and East African Cooperation, Ambassador Mahmoud Kombo, has delivered a message from President Samia to the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General, António Guterres. The statement released today, December 14, 2025, explained that while receiving the message, Guterres emphasized that "Tanzania continues to be a model of peace and social cohesion in Africa and the world at large." Additionally, the Government stated that the Secretary-General noted this reputation was tested during the General Election on October 29, and he praised the country for its resilience in maintaining national unity and stability.
Guterres reportedly expressed the UN's commitment to ensuring that Tanzania maintains its unity and remains an exemplary model for other nations. The Government statement says he stressed the importance of continuing an inclusive and productive national dialogue to address the root causes of the violent incidents that occurred during the election and to establish strategies to prevent their recurrence.
Furthermore, it is reported that Guterres confirmed the continued cooperation and full support of the United Nations for the ongoing efforts of the Tanzanian Government, including support during and after the completion of the work of the established Commission of Inquiry.
Public Opinion:
Many mocked the Government's move to send a message to the UN, sensing it was "cleansing" propaganda regarding all the allegations of events that took place during the election.
Others questioned the reality of Guterres' statements, saying they do not believe he said those words until they see a video of him speaking them, as they think it is a Government tactic to clean its image and show that international nations and institutions accept it.
