116 people arrested in Mwanza for 'Coordinating Demonstrations'

The Police Force in Mwanza Region has arrested 116 people alleged to be involved in coordinating demonstrations scheduled for December 9. The police stated that these demonstrations constitute a breach of the peace and emphasized that they are officially banned.

Speaking to journalists on December 6, 2025, at the Nyamagana Central Police Station, Mwanza Regional Police Commander Wilbrod Mutafungwa said that investigations against the suspects are ongoing alongside strengthened patrols to keep the region safe.

Additionally, Mutafungwa called on parents and guardians to prevent youths from participating in the demonstrations. Instead, he urged that the day be used to commemorate Tanzania's Independence, emphasizing that these measures aim to protect citizens' safety and prevent the violence witnessed during the October 29 elections.

Citizens' Views:
Many continue to question whether holding demonstrations is a crime, especially when done by the opposition or citizens disagreeing with the Government, given that the constitution allows it. They say this situation is increasing hatred between citizens and security organs and could contribute to citizens seeking revenge due to long-term rights violations by these organs, without action being taken.

Others view the arrests as a tactic to scare people away from the demonstrations, stating that this tactic does not intimidate them and that they will turn out to demonstrate as announced.

Chief Sheikh and Mufti of Tanzania: Muslims Should Not Demonstrate on December 9

The Chief Sheikh and Mufti of Tanzania, Abubakar Zuber, has urged Tanzanians living abroad to use the opportunities they have outside Tanzania's borders to contribute to development and the building of the national economy, rather than inciting or supporting actions that could disrupt the country's peace and stability. He emphasized that peace is the pillar of development, and without national solidarity, development efforts cannot achieve their intended goals.

Furthermore, the Mufti pleaded with Muslims across the country not to involve themselves in the December 9 demonstrations, which could endanger peace, asking them to avoid incitement and religious hatred. He explained that Islam encourages living kindly with people of all religions, protecting citizens' lives, and maintaining national unity. He asked other spiritual leaders to continue educating their believers on the importance of peace and stability at all times.

Citizens' Views:
Many have accused the Mufti, as well as other Islamic leaders who have issued statements, of being used by the Government to hinder citizens' efforts to demand rights in the country. They stated that his declaration will not stop people from demonstrating because Tanzanians have refused to be divided by religion, emphasizing that "Gen Z has no religion!"

Msigwa: We, Tanzania, are not threatened by CNN. We Won't Unblock X Until We have an Agreement...

Speaking in an interview with journalist Edwin Odemba, the Chief Government Spokesperson, Gerson Msigwa, indicated that his recent statement about the Government of Tanzania implementing projects with its own funds had been misrepresented. He emphasized that he did not mean it as it was portrayed or circulated by some people, but instead that the statement was "spun." He also explained the importance of journalists adhering to professional principles and canons, including listening to and considering all sides before publishing information.

Regarding the events of October 29 and the following days, Msigwa clarified that the "violence" caused 672 fuel stations to be burned down, with one owner losing 33 stations. He stated that this figure is the same as that given by the Prime Minister, despite reports circulating in the media to the contrary. Msigwa emphasized that security organs are always ready to ensure the safety of citizens, their property, and the country's borders.

Regarding Press Freedom and CNN, Msigwa stated that a journalist from a major media outlet like CNN cannot produce a report by gathering photos and videos via WhatsApp, and that it is unprofessional to publish news without giving the other side a chance to respond. He emphasized that the Government of Tanzania was not allowed to present its side, and that CNN could not threaten them. He added that journalist Larry Madowo must adhere to professional standards when presenting information.

Additionally, Msigwa emphasized that religious leaders should preach peace and love rather than issuing statements that could be construed as incitement. He also stated that the social media platform Twitter (X) will be opened once there is an agreement on how it will operate in Tanzania, in accordance with procedures and laws.

Citizens' Views:
Many have criticized Msigwa and the Government for failing to provide answers regarding the CNN report, hiding behind the excuse that they were not given a chance to respond.

Others have said they trust the CNN report more than the Government or even the Commission of Inquiry formed by the President (expected to release its report soon) because history has taught them that the Government is not reliable in providing truthful information on events concerning public interest. They also added that Larry provided that report to help Tanzanians raise their voices after local journalists were suppressed from reporting the information.

Regarding the statistics on burned fuel stations, citizens continue to express confusion, as the Government claims over 600 stations were burned, while reports from station owners say only 41 stations were affected. Citizens say this is a tactic used to blame citizens and use the loophole to obtain money through deceitful means. They continued to criticize the Government for not mentioning the number of lives lost while having all the information on property damage, showing they value things more than human life.

Regarding the blockage of X (formerly Twitter) in the country, many have said the defense regarding the presence of 'sexual content' is being used merely as an excuse, with the aim being to prevent citizens from criticizing the Government because they know they do not have control over that network, unlike what happened with Meta, who agreed to close activists' accounts.
