A quarter of Kenyans believe in witchcraft even though they are deeply religious, a survey shows. They also believe that the world will end in the next 39 years.

According to the survey conducted by The Pew Research Center, a US-based organisation dealing in religious research, Kenyans are ranked 11th in Africa and 16th in the world on the most religious people, with nearly nine in every 10 people stating that religion plays an important role in their lives.

The Tolerance and Tension: Islam and Christianity in Sub-Saharan Africa survey compares Kenya to the Czech Republic and Sweden where only eight out of 100 people said religion was important.

But in spite of impressive religious credentials, strong belief in one God, and in heaven and hell, the survey found that sub-Saharan Africa, Kenya included, leads in the worship of alternative gods — witchcraft, evil spirits, and sacrifices to ancestors, traditional religious healers and reincarnation.

Kenya is ranked 15th in Africa in its people’s belief in witchcraft, a few points behind the Democratic Republic of Congo, and way ahead of Ethiopia, Nigeria, Zambia and Rwanda. A quarter of Kenyans, both Christians and Muslims, confessed they believe in the protective power of juju (charms or amulets) and that they consult traditional healers.

A number admitted to revering their dead ancestors and treasuring animal skins and skulls or knowing of friends or relatives who identify with these faiths. Tanzania leads the pack in believing in juju and other superstitious objects, with six in every 10 Tanzanians confessing to sacrificing to spirits and dead ancestors.

The Rwandans, according to the poll, are the least superstitious people in Africa, with only five out of 100 people interviewed saying they believed in juju. And with a shrinking life expectancy of 57 years, Christian and Muslim Kenyans believe the end of the world is near.

Some 61 per cent of adult Christians in Kenya believe Jesus will come before they die. Similarly, 53 per cent of Kenyan Muslims said the caliphate — the golden age of Islam — will come before they die. In terms of end-of-times belief, both Kenyan Muslims and Christians are ranked seventh behind Tanzania.

Kenyan and Rwandan Christians tie in the percentage of people who believe the end of the world is near. Congolese Christians and Mozambican Muslims top the list of countries that believe the end of time is coming sooner than we think, at 69 per cent. In terms of peaceful coexistence, the survey unearthed a simmering sense of suspicion between the two dominant religions; Christianity and Islam. This is because both know very little about each other.

Fewer than half of Christians said they knew either some or a great deal about Islam. Similarly, fewer than half of Muslims say they know either some or a great deal about Christianity. Members of both faiths said they were uncomfortable with their children marrying from outside their religion.

Ninaamini Tanzania kuna uchawi mwingi sana, yaani sana, hasa upande wa pwani wooote, hakuna mtu ambaye hajawahi kwenda kwa mganga wa kienyeji, bara watu wanakuwa wachawi, lakini uchawi wao hauko connected na dini kama walivyo watu wa pwani wengi ambao dini yao inaruhusu kufuga majini na hirizi, na wachawi wakubwa zaidi, wasoma nyota, wakuu wa anga, wakuu wa giza etc kama kina shee Yahya, ndio viongozi wanaowaabudisha hata kwenye misa zao misikitini. the devil leading a mass. hahaha. Come on! Ndio maana hatuendelei. People take these things literally. I think conventional religion pushes people to also believe in these other forms of spiritual juju. Jesus back before we are dead? The Golden-age of the caliphate? Are you people insane! Even the pilgrims believed that theres was a time when the world would end bla bla bla.. earthquakes? is that a sign..lol People are just insane and believe anything.

Ndio maana ata matatizo ya umeme, umaskini etc hatuwezi yamaliza.. people being so naive, believe the world will end in the next 20 years... How can we plan for 2050 or 2100. Ndio wazungu nwanapotupiga bao. Religion F***ed Africa.

Hakyaanani Tz kwa hotuba ya kukatisha tamaa kama ya JK kwa Tucta ikiwa huna Mungu kweli kweli lazima uwe mchawi. Maana hakuna tumaini aliloliacha kwa hawa wafanyakazi ila waishi kimuujiza. Jaribu kufikiria kama mtu analipwa 104000 ina maana analipwa 3000 kwa siku. Hiyo itamwezesha je kuishi kama asipowekeza kwenye jinai?.
 
Okay I'm just wondering were the hell is Gambia in this 'study', mambo ya Yahya Jammeh kufanya witch hunts in his country surely ni a way more large scale act of superstition than the hunting of a small minority of albinos hapa Tanzania, at least huku Kikwete hajaorder a witch hunt because some relative of his was allegedly killed by 'magic', come on people!

Oh and by the way Kinyambiss is quite right 'RELIGION FUXCKED AFRICA' worse than a Jew could ever be raped in Sobibor.

That is very true. The more religious you are, the more superstitious one gets. They go together.

A coin has two sides and if one side is religion, then the other side is devil.

Look at those places where people do not care about religions, they are ahead for
they do not think or care about those funny beliefs which has made this continent
a laughing stock.

Many of us believe in Madawas na unganga and yet we're the poorest of the poor
and wonder if these Madawas really helps.
 
Nadhani hii ripoti inahusu watua waliohojiwa. Kuna ukweli kuwa watu pamoja na ya kuwa ni Wakristo au Waislaim bado wanakwenda kwa waganga wa kienyeji na wanavaa hirizi. Hata katika maofisi wapo (wengi wanaoamini katika uchawi pia wamesoma) na wakiwa katika nafasi wanadhani kuwa wamepata kwa sababu ya kwenda kuchukua hirizi kwa waganga. Ni aibu sana lakini supernatural powers watu wanaamini. Nchi kama Nigeria kwa mfano wameweza kupeleka malaya mpaka ulaya (Netherlands) kwa kutumia njia za miujiza bila ya hao malaya kuwa na document yoyote. Walipokamatwa ambapo walishaafika na kukaa kwa muda wakasema kuwa wakishafika na kufanya biashara inabidi watume fedha kumlipa mganga wao up to a tune or more than USD2000. Then you can see that Africa has a great knowledge na imeanza kutumika on commercial basis!

Like I've said before and I will say it now,STUPID researches done by STUPID reseachers for for STUPID people, just depends in the group one falls in.
 
I wish the Nigerians and other Africans countries would have put these
madawas and Unganga in good use to win the world cups.
