MP Opposes Fresh Cuts Tax Relief Over NSSF Concerns

Katikamu County North MP Denes Sekabira has opposed a proposed tax relief for Fresh Cuts, questioning what would happen to workers’ National Social Security Fund (NSSF) contributions if Parliament approves the waiver.

Sekabira told the committee that NSSF benefits are personal rights belonging to workers, arguing that Parliament cannot simply waive obligations tied to employees’ savings without addressing how those contributions would be protected.

The MP said the committee was informed that Fresh Cuts has outstanding NSSF arrears while continuing to file monthly returns, raising concerns over whether workers’ contributions are actually being remitted.

“These NSSF benefits are personal rights. And someone is saying you waive off someone’s right. So if Parliament approves this waiver, who is going to remit this money to the beneficiaries that are giving labour to this company?”

Sekabira questioned whether granting Fresh Cuts tax relief without resolving its NSSF obligations could ultimately leave workers bearing the cost.

He consequently rejected the proposed approval, saying he fully supported the position taken by opposition members on the committee.

“I therefore object to this approval and associate entirely myself with a submission of the Opposition.”
