The Chairperson of the Board of Trustees of the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation, elder Joseph Waryoba Butiku, has said the nation went through a difficult period that brought embarrassment to the country, drawing concern from both neighbours and the international community.
On January 22, 2026, speaking at the opening of a meeting between the Mwalimu Nyerere Foundation and elders, Butiku said:
“A few days ago we faced a problem and we wavered a little – I don’t want to repeat it, you know it. Since the 29th, we have been a bit shaken and embarrassed. The words of our leaders felt like something passed right through us, and we wavered, but fortunately, we did not fall. We are still here, carrying this embarrassment, which is not ours alone; those who know us, neighbors near and far, feel sorry for us and did not expect that even we Tanzanians would be like this. They say, ‘You are like this, so how did it happen with us?’”
