Eight Senior Four students of Kigezi High School in Kabale District have been arrested for allegedly inciting violence during the ongoing Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE) examinations.

Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime said the suspects are being detained at Kabale Central Police Station as investigations continue.

The arrests follow a mini-strike at the school in which windowpanes and a CCTV camera were allegedly destroyed. Tumushime said police responded swiftly and efforts to arrest additional suspects were ongoing.

He added that police deployment at the school had been maintained to restore order and prevent further disruptions, warning that a small group of students should not be allowed to interfere with learning.

Meanwhile, headteacher Abraham Akampurira said the arrested students were among 11 learners suspended on Monday after allegedly attempting to escape from the school over the weekend.

According to Akampurira, the students appeared before the school disciplinary committee, which resolved to suspend them. However, they later returned and allegedly attempted to disrupt school operations, mainly targeting security guards.

Senior Four candidates began their UCE examinations last week, but the affected students have not yet completed their papers. The Nile Post understands that the school will make arrangements for them to complete the examinations.

Police have arrested eight Senior Four students of Kigezi High School in Kabale Municipality following a violent strike.

The strike, which has since been contained by police, broke out in the early hours of Wednesday, October 21, 2026, after students reportedly became rowdy over grievances relating to the school administration.

Nelson Tumushime, the Kigezi regional police spokesperson, said the school administration notified police, prompting officers to respond and restore order.

“About eight Senior Four students have been detained, and the situation is now calm,” Tumushime said.

He added that police personnel remain deployed at the school to prevent further disturbances and maintain order.

No fatalities had been reported by the time of the statement, while an assessment of possible property damage and injuries was still ongoing.

Tumushime urged students to use lawful channels to present their grievances rather than resorting to violence.

He also called on parents to counsel their children against engaging in violent conduct.

Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the strike are ongoing.
