Plagiarism
Quite simply, plagiarism is theft 😱
As I presented in the previous thread that reference is so important for scholars 👨🏫 and trusted writers ✍. Failure to acknowledge other people’s works results directly to plagiarism
Today I want to present one of the techniques that can help you be a trusted writer or skilled scholar. Hence, an ethical writer or scholar
I.e. Paraphrasing
Paraphrasing is a technique that uses the writer’s own words to convey the ideas and information of others. They are much more common than direct quotation and show that the writer has a strong understanding of the subject. a paraphrase is the same length as the original and contains all the information of the original. Since it is easy to accidentally change meaning when rewriting, make sure that you understand what you read and write. When in doubt, show your writing to an advisor, senior student, or writing tutor. Every time a paraphrase or summary is used, it is crucial to cite the original source.
Here are the suggested techniques to help when paraphrasing
1. Use synonyms:
Original:
The administration has become frustrated by frequent rescheduling.
Paraphrase:
The administration has become frustrated by recurrent schedule changes.
2. Change the verb form:
Original:
The administration has become frustrated by frequent rescheduling.
Paraphrase :
The administration became frustrated by frequent rescheduling.
3. Change the parts of speech:
Original:
The administration has become frustrated by frequent rescheduling.
Paraphrase:
The high frequency of rescheduling has become a frustration for the administration.
A well-written paraphrase will simultaneously take advantage of more than one of these strategies. A writer may still be accused of plagiarism if they make only small changes when rewriting. The above examples highlight specific techniques, but cannot be considered as ideal because there is too little variation. Below is an example of using several techniques.
Original:
The administration has become frustrated by frequent rescheduling.
Paraphrase:
Regular changes to the schedule are frustrating the administration.
