Position
: Assistant (Field and Greenhouse)

Key duties & Responsibilities
  • Support in making bean crosses for different bean varieties.
  • Assist in conducting and collecting necessary data for advanced breeding and seed multiplication at different locations.
  • Support in analyzing the data and report to supervisor on time.
  • Visiting fields regularly to monitor weeds, disease development, and insect growth.
  • Collecting soil, tissue, and samples from fields for analysis.
  • Assisting with research work and other project’s activities.
  • Assist in field layout and mapping.
  • Assist seed inventory and greenhouse activities.
  • Carry out any other duties that will be assigned to he/her by the supervisor.

Requirements​

  • Diploma in crop production, plant breeding or any other related areas of study.
  • At least one-year experience in breeding activities especially in beans and other related crops will be an added advantage.
  • Experience in data collection and entry, data management, quality assurance, and timely reporting.
  • High attention to detail and excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and Kiswahili.
  • Computer proficiency including MS Office (Word/ PowerPoint, advanced Excel skills
  • Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision, but also participate as a team member in the accomplishment of duties.
  • Excellent interpersonal with advanced written and verbal communication skills in English language.
  • Strong ability to coordinate, prioritize and organize workload; take initiative and work under pressure.

Terms of employment

This position is a nationally recruited position based in Arusha, Tanzania. The initial contract will be for one year subject to a probation period of three months and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.

This position is graded at BG 04 level, with a minimum basic salary of 915,302.00 Tanzania Shillings in a scale of BG01 to BG14 (BG14 being the highest level according to the Alliance job classification framework policy). Position: I
ntern- Social Economist

Key duties & Responsibilities
  • Support field survey and breeding teams to organize socioeconomic and gender data of various location OnFarm GS trials.
  • Conduct data analysis as guided by the senior researchers.
  • Conduct market analysis as per guidance of socio-economist.
  • Support the active communication and visibility of the programme (website, social media).
  • Support the logistical and organisational output of the programme through invitations, agenda, talking points, power point preparations.
  • Support crop researchers on data capture and data storage.
  • Regularly communicate status and progress made on activity given, developments towards senior reseachers.
  • Help maintain and enhance communications on bean breeding and Seed System (inter alia: writing messages, posting mail chimp emails, managing list serve names, interfacing with web manager; expanding social media).

Requirements​

  • Recently Completed MSc degree in Agribusiness/Economics, knowledge of Geographical Information System (GIS) will be an added advantage.
  • Knowledge on the use of data analysis tool such as R statical software, SPSS, GenStat, and other GIS packages.
  • Experience of the use of digital data collection tools such as ODK, Survey CTO will be added advantage.
  • Excellent drafting skills, capable of producing high-quality analytical documents and organising and summarizing materials clearly for a variety of audiences.
  • High analytical computing skills with good knowledge of MS Office applications.
  • Knowledge on data management ethics.
  • Good communication, written and interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively in a multicultural team.

Main Responsibilities
  • Support in providing technical assistance in data collection, analysis, interpretation for the breeding lines.
  • Support in use of computer skills for data analysis using software such as R and SAS.
  • Assist in organizing data, documentation and developing technical reports and publications.

  • A MSc degree – recently graduated in a relevant discipline such as Bioinformatics, Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Computational Biology.
  • Proficiency in R/python (prior experience in performing bioinformatics analyses in R/python would be an advantage).
  • Experience in performing data analyses using various software tools using R or on high-performance computing platforms.
  • Experience in genomics and sequencing technologies such as DNA, and RNA-seq, spatial transcriptomics, etc.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Assistant – Pathology Laboratory

Key duties & Responsibilities
  • Support in tissue sampling and other routine tasks associated with experiments.
  • Support in mechanical inoculation of virus, bacteria, fungi, oomycete, nematode and other pathogens in field, greenhouse, and growth chambers.
  • Support the process of bioassays with insects/vectors.
  • Support in routine data collection from various sized research projects and entry into enterprise systems.

Position:
Research Associate

Key duties & responsibilities

The Research Associate will coordinate the investment screening process and impact assessment of Agri-SMEs and provide technical assistance on CSA practices. More specifically, The Research Associate will:
  • Develop adaptation and resilience key performance indicators for the project.
  • Establish a CSA impact assessment methodology with a focus on adaptation and resilience.
  • Develop and design the survey questionnaires, interviews, and reporting framework according to the key performance indicators.
  • Conduct the pre-investment CSA impact screening and portfolio assessment for the Agri-SMEs cohort.
  • Build capacity of partners and other stakeholders on the CSA impact screening methodology.
  • Develop and deliver CSA capacity training packages customized for business models within the acceleration and incubation cohorts.
  • Recommend high-impact CSA practices to Agri-SMEs based on the impact analysis and risk assessment.
  • Provide tailored technical assistance for adoption and operationalization of recommended practices to the shortlisted Agri-SMEs to receive the follow-on support.
  • Contribute to the development of data infrastructure integrating agro-climatic and socio environmental dimensions, climate impact and climate risk analysis in the pipeline screening process and portfolio assessments.
  • Provide input and regular updates to project team about implementation status, action points from meetings workshops and any implementation challenges.

Requirements​

  • Bachelor’s degree in agricultural or biological sciences, international development, agribusiness or related fields. Masters will be an added advantage.
  • Minimum of 4 years of relevant experience providing technical support to Scientists (including on proposal development).
  • Experience in research and data analysis projects.
  • Experience working on socio-environmental impact assessments of agricultural activities/investments.
  • Native English speaker, or fluent with idiomatic command of English, and demonstrably high verbal and written English skills. Fluency in French will be an added advantage.
  • Superior analysis and insight generation capacity.
  • Strong client service orientation.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills including the ability to work effectively with other national and cultural backgrounds.
  • Excellent eye for detail, critical thinking, high standards of excellence, personal organization, prioritization and time management skills, flexibility, and the ability to deliver on agreed deadlines.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.
