Tanzanian Mining Expert Appointed General Manager of African Barick Gold Mine

    DAR ES SALAAM, (August 28, 2012) – African Barrick Gold (ABG) is pleased to announce that it has appointed Philbert Rweyemamu as General Manager of the Tulawaka Gold Mine.


    Mr. Rweyemamu, who is one of the most experienced Tanzanian mining executives, has more than 30 years professional mining experience. He will commence duties on 3 September 2012.


    He previously worked for DeBeers Williamson Mine in various roles, the most senior being Director of Production, a position he held from 2001 to 2003. He then held the position of Mining Manager Services from 2003 to 2004 at Orapa & Lethakane Mines in Botswana after which he moved to South Africa with DeBeers where he worked as Mining Manager for Oaks Mine in Limpopo.


    Mr. Rweyemamu was then promoted to the position of Operations Manager for Namaqualand Mines in Kleinzee, South Africa.


    He left DeBeers and joined ABG’s North Mara Mine in 2007 where he worked as Mining Manager. From 2007 to 2010 he headed up the Artisinal Mining and Small-Scale Mining Project for Barrick in Tanzania before being appointed as Government Relations Manager for ABG, a position he held until March 2012. Mr. Rweyemamu then left ABG to join Shanta Mining Company on the Singida Project as General Manager.


    Mr. Rweyemamu holds a Masters of Science degree in Mining Engineering, Geomechanics, from the University of Exeter, Camborne School of Mines in England. He also holds a Bachelor of Engineering in Mining Engineering from Camborne School of Mines and a Mining Technology Diploma from Hailey School of Mines, Ontario in Canada.

    Mtu kama huyu alitakiwa akawe chachu ya kujua wizi tunaofanyiwa na hawa majangili wa magharaibi ili tufike mahali pa kusema enough is enough. Cha ajabu akifika huko anakuwa Mkanada badala ya kuwa Mtanzania.

    Ndugu zangu tusiwe na roho ya kuibiwa kila siku...Mining Act ya 1998 tulicopy na kupaste ya Australia na kuifanyia mabadiliko kwenye royality ( ya kwetu iliongezwa na kuwa 3% wakati original ni 2%). Sheria hii ilishindwa kufanya kazi kwa manufaa ya umma, wawekezaji waliifuata kama ilivyo wakati serikali ya magamba iliikanyaga.Sasa wakulaumiwa ni nani hapo... Sheria mpya ya madini ya sasa (mining act 2010) ni ya Ghana tumetoa neno Ghana na kupachika Jamhuri ya Muungano wa Tanzania. Ghana kila mtu anaishangilia bongo tunalalamikia wawekezaji. Tatizo ni serikali ya magamba ndo inayo chakachua kile kilicho haki yetu na wanakimbizia Uswisi...Haiwezekani mtu asulipe income tax na corporate tax kwa miaka kumi...hapa kuna namna...Tumechachamaa wenye nchi ndo maana unaona Serikali na GGM wameamua kuwa wawazi na kuanza kulipa...bado mengi..The bottom line is that our government through its ruling party are the problems

    Akiwafuata mawazo nyie wazawa atapigwa chini mara moja na hakuna atakayemtetea, hili ndio tatizo la nchi yetu. Ninachojua huyu atapewa maslahi ya kufa mtu kiasi kwamba hatakubali kuyakosa kwa namna yoyote ile.

    Hao Barrick ni wanafiki na waongo mno, huo mgodi upo mbioni kufa na anatafutwa mchawi wa kutishwa mzigo na mwisho wa siku wameamua kumpa Mtanzania ili wapate cha kusema kuwa Mtanzania ndio kaua huo mgodi, kwa nini hawakumpa mgodi kama wa Bulyangulu ama Buzwagi ama NorthMara?

    I know this guy. He is a very good guy. Mwaka jana tu kampuni ya Shanta Gold walimchukua kutoka Barrick na kumuahidi pesa nzuri tu. For a short period ambayo alikuwa hapo nimeona jinsi alivyokuwa ana-tetea maslahi ya Geologists watanzania na nadhani hawa mabosi wa shanta hawakuipenda hiyo ndo maana ka-tender resignation na karudi Barrick. Big up sana Rweyemamu

    I congratulate Rweyemamu for this appointment. What I do not understand is that, I was told Tulawaka's mine life was to the end by June this year. What is happening?

    Nionavyo mimi kuna matatizo yafuatay katika nchi yetu.

    La kwanza kabisa ni kuwa wachimbaji wakubwa wote tulionao ni makampuni ya kigeni. Kwa hiyo Tanzania inaambulia tu kile kiichoandikwa kwenye mkataba na siyo zaidi. Katika nchi kama Afrika ya Kusini au Australia makampuni makubwa ya uchimbaji madini ni ya nchi hizo. Kwa hiyo faida inayopatikana inabakia nchini. Ghana wao wana hisa kwenye makampuni yanayochimba nchini mwao. Sisi hapa kwetu haijawezekana hata kidogo. Sielewi ni kwa nini.

    Mrahaba wa 3% unatumika nchi nyingi sana duniani. Sisi tuwatoa misamaha ya kodi ambayo imekuja kutuumiza. Baada ya mikataba kuandikwa basi makampuni haya hufuata kama mikataba inavyosema.

    Mara nyingi nasikia watu wakisema ati kuna ndege zinaruka kutoka nchini na kwenda nje ya nchi na madini bila sisi kujua kuwa wanatuibia. Hilo ni gumu sana kufanyika. Tunasema hivyo kwa sabau hatujui kabisa jinsi makampuni haya yanavyofanya kazi. Wamiliki wa makampuni haya ni watu wengi wenye hisa kutoka sehemu nyingi duniani. Mameneja wakiiba madini na kutorosha kutoka Tanzania licha ya kuwaiibia Watanzania wanawaibia wanahisa. Hilo hawawezi kufanya. Wanahisa wapo macho zaidi kuona kuwa kila kitu kinakwenda kama inavyotarajiwa.

    Sasa hivi makampuni mengi yameanza kulipa kodi ya mapato lakini wananchi wengi hawajui hilo.Serikali nayo inashindwa kuwaeleza Watanzania kuwa makampuni yameanza kulipa kodi mbalimbali.
