Dar es Salaam. Tanzania has won one of the respectable United Nations awards on public services delivery.
The country received the UN award yesterday in Dar es Salaam after winning in the second category involving promotion of public service delivery in Africa.
The country won the category through its project of property and business formalisation known as Mkurabita in Kiswahili.Speaking shortly after receiving the award on behalf of the government, the minister of State in the Presidents Office in charge of Social Relations Coordination, Mr Stephen Wassira, said the country scooped the award after owing to Mkurabitas strategies to improve peoples lives.
He said through the project, people could use their properties as collateral in applying for loans.Since poor people lack capital, the formalisation programmes enable people to get loans, he said.
Despite the fact that the project is funded by the central government, Mr Wassira said it was difficult to implement in all regions due to financial constraints. He said that once the districts allocated their own funds to their projects, they would benefit early from the projects without waiting for the central governments money.Mkurabita had so far been implemented in Arusha, Njombe and Morogoro regions.
For his part, Vice President Gharib Bilal said the award was inherently motivational and was something that needed to be upheld. The UN award is the most prestigious international recognition of excellence in public service.
It rewards the creative achievements and contributions of public service institutions that lead to a more effective and responsive public administration in countries worldwide.Through an annual competition, the UN Public Service Awards promotes the role, professionalism and visibility of public service
