More electricity flows into national grid

    By Correspondent

    9th December 2010

Energy and Minerals minister, William Ngeleja (L), on a working tour of power plants in Dar es Salaam yesterday, listens as Songas` plant manager, Robert Hosky briefs him on progress in fixing the machine breakdown at the plant.

The government has increased the supply of heavy fuel to Independent Power, Tanzania Ltd (IPTL) enabling it to pump more electricity, easing rationing.
This was said yesterday by the Energy and Minerals Minister, William Ngeleja during his visit at the Independent Power, Tanzania Ltd (IPTL).
He said the government had increased supply of heavy fuel to the IPTL boosting the plant's power production from 10 megawatts to 70 megawatts as of yesterday. IPTL pumps electricity to the national grid.
"IPTL has been short of heavy fuel for power production because of financial constraints on the part of the government. But with increased heavy fuel, it is now producing more electricity. I believe, this will help to mitigate the power crisis," said Ngeleja.
But he warned: "Ongoing power rationing would end after Tanesco' technicians complete repairing faulty machines at Songas gas plant and the Kipawa power transformer," he told reporters at the plant compound.
According to the minister, the latest power crisis, which forced Tanesco to embark on a countrywide load-shedding, was caused by technical problems that faced Songas, Ubungo gas plans, New Pangani Falls plant and decreased inflow of water at Kihansi and Kidatu hydro-power plants, fuel shortage at IPTL, defective power transformer.
"But yesterday there was no rationing because IPTL electricity production increased, and the volume of water increased by almost 1.3 metres at Kidatu hydro-power plant."
Repairs to defective machines at Songas gas plant had been completed and would add 32 megawatts to the grid, according to the minister.
Tanesco technicians in collaboration with experts from the US were still working on another defective 32 megawatt power plant, Ngeleja said, noting that the work is expected to be concluded on Friday.
"I am sure by Saturday, power crisis in the country would be resolved to a great extent," said the minister.
Reacting to a planned private motion of no confidence in him, for failure to oversee effective and efficient implementation of the country's power-master plan, minister Ngeleja said his resignation was not a solution to the power woes in the country.
The Kigoma-South MP (NCCR-Mageuzi), David Kafulila, recently announced that he was planning to present a private motion in the Parliament to press for the resignation of the energy minister for failure to supervise power master-plan, a situation which has plunged the nation into darkness several times.
"That is his (Kafulila) opinion…I cannot prevent him from expressing his views. But I should insist that my resignation would not be a solution to power crisis in Tanzania," he said.
Asked about the ruling on the Tanesco-Dowans case, the minister said the issue was now in the hands of the Attorney General.
"The file of the controversial issue is now being worked on by the Attorney General…," said Ngeleja.

    Mtera yawahakikishia Watanzania
