JUBA, Sudan-Southern Sudan's referendum commission said more than 99% of voters in the south opted for secession, based on the first official primary results released since the vote was held earlier this month.

The head of the commission's southern bureau, Justice Chan Reec Madut, said Sunday in the region's capital of Juba that voter turnout in the 10 states in the south was also 99%. More than 60% of eligible voters turned out in the country's north, 58% of whom voted for secession, he said.

The chairman of the Southern Sudan Referendum Commission, Mohamed Ibrahim Khalil, said 99% of Sudanese voters in eight nations also voted for secession.
