Minister for Infrastructure Development Dr. Shukuru Kawambwa has directed the Tanzania Airports Authority (TAA) to work in partnership with the Tanzania National Roads Agency (Tanroads) to construct good roads surrounding the newly built Songwe International Airport in a bid to reduce congestion of vehicles when it starts to operate.
Kawambwa issued the order last week when he toured the airport to inspect the construction process.
He said he was satisfied with the current construction pace and that he was sure the construction would be completed by the end of this year.
However, he said upon completion and the airport opened there would be congestion of vehicles, people and business in the area. He said it was therefore, important to take urgent measures to build good roads around the a stivedive airport.
"The Tunduma road borders the airport and therefore, urgent measures must be taken to build good roads near the airport in a move to avoid transport obstruction," he said.
Earlier, while briefing the minister on the construction development, TAA director Prosper Tesha said construction of the airport was complete by between 60 and 70 per cent and by the end of next month, runways would be completed.
He further said that the construction of the passengers' lounge was underway and it was expected to be completed by the end of the year. Songwe airport is expected to be among the best airports in the country upon its completion and is said to be bigger that Mwalimu Julius Nyerere international airport in Dar es Salaam. Songwe's runway is 3.5 km long while Mwalimu Julius Nyerere's is only 3.0 Km. Source ippmedia.
