Scout Society marred with allegations of drug and human trafficking misappropriation of funds

Squabbling and allegations of abuse of office have forced the Minister for Education and Vocational Training, Dr Shukuru Kawambwa, to sack the entire leadership of the Tanzania Scout Society.

Dr Kawambwa announced at a news conference in Dar es Salaam on Thursday that he had appointed a seven-people committee to govern the society in a transition period of six months. Those faced by the axe include Commissioner General who also acted as Scout Master, Mr Lawrence Mhomwa, Deputy Commissioner General and all Acting Deputy Commissioners as well as all members of the Scout's National Executive Committee.
"The committee will be chaired by Brig. Gen. Gerald Mkude (Rtd). It will be charged with heading the society towards an election to be conducted within six months," Dr Kawambwa said. Other members of the committee include Rev. D. Mhando, Mr Abdallah Sakasa, Mr Salum S. Salum in addition to Ms Tunu Temu, Mr Zulu Liana and Mr Bashir Shelimoh.
Among others, the committee will also be charged with identifying and assessing accusations levelled against the immediate and past leadership of the society and propose a way forward. The Minister explained, however, that it would be the leadership which will be elected after six months that would take actions against the allegations.
Over the years, the society has been marred with allegations of drug and human trafficking, misappropriation of funds and abuse of office to mention but a few.4
