A bomb explosion at a bus station in Nairobi was caused by a grenade carried by a man believed to be Tanzanian, Kenya's police commissioner has said. Mathew Iteere said the suspect had been boarding a bus to Uganda but became nervous due to security checks, causing him to drop the grenade.
The man is believed to have been one of the three people killed in Monday's blast, which wounded 39 others. Ugandan police have said al-Shabab militants may be linked to the attack. Hours before the attack, Uganda's police chief warned of Christmas terror attacks by the Somali Islamist group.

Al-Shabab in July said it had carried out twin bomb blasts in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, in retaliation for Uganda's support for Somalia's government. "We have confirmed that it was an act of one person and this is the person who died in the incident. We are yet to gather if he was working with other people," Mr Iteere said at a news conference. "In these incidents which have happened, we have found that most people perpetrating this type of crime are people who have recently converted to Islamic faith. These are the people who have been radicalised and indoctrinated," he said. The commissioner added that the grenade was similar to one which killed a policeman earlier this month in Nairobi.

'Nervous'
Ugandan police said there was reason to believe al-Shabab were involved, and said they were stepping up security at border points with Kenya and Sudan. "We believe there's a connection between the threats we're getting from al-Shabab and other al-Qaeda affiliated groups and the attack in Nairobi," Uganda's top police officer, Inspector General Kale Kayihura, said. The blast on Monday night smashed the windows of the Kampala Coach vehicle, and left blood stains and scattered bags on the ground nearby. Most of the wounded were Ugandans travelling home for Christmas, Red Cross official Nelly Muluka told the Associated Press.

The BBC's Will Ross in Nairobi says the explosion might have been on a small scale but it has certainly made people nervous as they set off for their Christmas leave across the country and the region.
Al-Shabab has in the past threatened to attack Kenya because of its support for Somalia's weak, UN-backed government.

Mungu peke yake ndiye ajuaye usalama wetu hasa sisi waswahili, hatuna ubavu wa kupambana na ugaidi. Our efforts are always reactionary. Tuombe tu al shabaab wasije huku bongo kwani we are very soft target!

Dear Shakazulu, thank you for this bad news but the heading is incorrect...A Tanzanian carried the grenade that caused a bus blast in Nairobi. The cause is a bomb!

Sasa nafikiri watanzania hatutaaminika maana haya majangiri yanayoendekeza imani za kishetani yamezidi kuporomosha jina letu zuri. Nimesikia yanajiita John. Ngoja tusubiri detail na pia tuone kama aliyekufa siye malaria sugu

Police have identified 40 year old Albert John Olando Molanda, a Tanzanian national as the man behind Monday night's Kampala coach bombing in Nairobi.
Police commissioner Mathew Iteere says Albert John who died in the attack has been confirmed as the suspect who attempted to board the bus with an F1 grenade before being intercepted by security officers. The motive of the bombing however remains unclear.
"Investigations have established that the man who was carrying the Russian-made grenade is Albert John Olando Mulanda, born in Mwanza, Tanzania," he told reporters.
"In the process the said passenger dropped the paper bag and immediately the explosion occurred. The explosion injured the said passenger, other passengers and passers by. Initial investigations have established that the following were injured:
"Preliminary investigations have established that the devise that exploded was an F1 Russian made Grenade similar to the one that exploded in a police Landrover within Eastleigh on 3rd December 2010."
According to police, the blast left one person dead and 41 others injured.
The FI grenade is a hand grenade that is said to weigh 600 grams with a 60 gram TNT explosive charge.
The device is said to explode 3.5 to 4 seconds after release dispersing shrapnel up to a point of 200 meters.
According to police, the explosive could only have come from outside the country's borders. And though the gadget could have originated miles from the scene of the atrocity, its lethal effects were reflected on its victims, many of whom are nursing injuries at the Kenyatta national hospital.
Police are blaming the upsurge of terrorism acts in the country on neighboring Somalia. Iteere says police will now use a notebook found on the deceased bomber with details of his contacts, to establish the true origin and motive of the grenade attack with a view to ensuring such an incident never again recur on Kenyan soil.
Meanwhile, Kenya and Uganda have ramped up security patrols following the late Monday explosion.
Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki promised thorough investigations and prosecution of those behind the blast, whose exact nature security officials here have yet to determine.
"The security of our people is paramount. No efforts will be spared to ensure that security is beefed up," Kibaki said in a statement.
"It is unfortunate that people can be so inhuman as to plan to use deadly devices to harm the innocent."
Uganda's Inpector General of Police Kale Kayihura and his Kenyan counterpart said Somalia's al Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents were likely behind the attack.
"I am yet to get details about the explosion in Nairobi, but it is most likely that Shebab may be behind this incident," Kayihura told reporters in Kampala.
"On our part as police, we have put in place extra measures in form of foot patrols, motorised patrols and general vigilance to prevent not only terrorism, but also other violent crime," he added.
Kenyan police were seen Tuesday patrolling Nairobi's busy streets where many travellers board buses to their upcountry homes for year-end holidays and festivities, an AFP correspondent said.
The Ugandan police chief told AFP Monday that authorities had received strong indications of threats by Islamist groups including the Shebab rebels and Allied Democratic Forces, a Ugandan Islamist group.
More than 70 people were killed in Uganda in July when suicide bombers struck two Kampala bars packed with crowds watching the World Cup final.
"There is a big possibility that these terrorist groups may attempt to repeat their diabolical plans on the country," said the Ugandan police chief.
The Shebab claimed responsibility for the attack, saying it was in retaliation for Uganda's deployment of troops to the African Union Mission in Somalia protecting the fragile government they are fighting to dislodge.
Seventeen people have been detained for trial over the Kampala attacks.
Kayihura said Ugandan authorities were working with Kenyan and Tanzanian counterparts to prevent further attacks by extremists.
Kenya and Tanzania suffered the region's worst attacks in August 1998 when al-Qaeda operatives bombed US embassies in Nairobi and Dar es Salaam, killing more than 200 people.
