Communication, Science and Technology minister Prof Makame Mbarawa ( picture below) yesterday launched a state-of-the-art communication and information technology centre, dubbed ‘TANZICT and Dar Teknohama Business Incubator (DTBi)' in Dar es Salaam.
The new centre has been designed to encourage and support entrepreneurial initiatives as well as innovations in the application of ICT for economic development and wealth creation for all.
The ceremony was hosted by the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (Costech).
In his remarks, Prof Mbarwa said the centre would help the growth of entrepreneurship and companies through nurturing and providing the necessary support structures for enterprise creation.
"I am hoping that the DTBi will tackle enterprise development whereby business ‘incubatees' will focus on the creation of new businesses and strengthening of existing ones so that they can create opportunities for themselves and for others in the community. These should grow to become commercial businesses that have the potential of earning high profits," he noted.
He said the project was aimed at creating open platforms for collaboration and information sharing, as well as the innovation space.
According to him, apart from joining entrepreneurs, the TANZICT innovation space would link together government institutions, international organisations, private sector industries, NGOs, university students and communities.
He lauded the joint effort between Tanzania and Finland with the support of infoDev of the Word Bank, which serves to strengthen the relationship.
Costech director general Dr Hassan Mshinda stated that his office supported the realisation of ICT-based activities for enhancement of economic growth in the country because it has been mandated to promote science, technology and innovation for socioeconomic development as provided in the Vision 2025.
He added that DTBi has been set up as an autonomous and private sector driven entity assisting early stage ICT companies by lowering the cost of business and increasing the chances of business survival because of access to share resources, building infrastructure and facilitating access to finance and markets through credible support, guidance and business management.
"We hope that business incubation will generate important externalities by creating a platform to influence the broader business environment for high-grow standard and medium entrepreneurs and for influencing policy directions taken by the government," he said.
