Makerere University, Uganda's prime public University has on Wednesday closed indefinitely following a fallout between staff and administration over salaries.

The decision to close the institution was announced by the university Council Chairman Dr Charles Wana Etyem at a press conference at Makerere's main campus.
This is the second time in less than two years that the university is closing over the same issues. In September 2011, the school closed following a week-long strike by lecturers who refused to work until their demands were met.

Last week, lecturers went on sit-down strike and vowed not work until management meets their demand for a 100 per cent pay increment.

Currently, the government pays 57 per cent of the staff salaries while the institution contributes 43 per cent.

Prof John Ddumba-Ssentamu, the Vice Chancellor, explained last week that following their earlier meeting, the council, the highest decision making body, had agreed to engage their workers and encourage them to work as management continued to negotiate with government to take over the university wage bill, something the lecturers ignored.
