The decision of a Russian neo-Nazi mercenary group stopping fighting in protest against the Kremlin indirectly helped Ukraine to make a major breakthrough on the front line.
“Robotyne has been released”, announced on August 28 the Deputy Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Hanna Maliar.
This small village, which before the war had a population of less than 500 people, may be of little importance in itself.
Despite this, it is located along a strategic road that leads to the railway and road center of Tokmak, occupied by the Russians.
From there, another road leads to Melitopol, which -before the illegal annexation of Crimea by Russia in 2014- Ukrainians knew her as the “front door” to the peninsula.
Therefore, last week’s victory was an important step forward for Ukraine, as revealed in an article by France24.
It is about a small Russian neo-Nazi paramilitary group stationed on the front line of Robotyne, who had threatened to lay down their arms.
This move may have contributed to Russia’s painful loss there.
The official reason for the threat to lay down their arms was explained by Rusich in a statement on Telegram on August 25.
One of the main commanders and founding members of the group, Yan Petrovsky, was detained in Finland and faced extradition to Ukraine (and the Russian Federation).
Petrovsky, Russian-Norwegian dual nationality, he co-founded Rusich in 2014 to participate in the Russian occupation of Donbas. In addition, it is believed that at one time he was a contractor for the Wagner group.
In a series of messages captured by the Anti-Fascist Europe research project, Rusich members expressed their frustration at their treatment by the Russian authorities.
“If the country cannot protect its citizens, why should the citizens protect the country?” asked one.
According to him Institute for the Study of War (ISW), the group appeared to be operating near Robotyne in western Zaporizhzhia Oblast.
Is described as “a critical area of the front line where the Russian military command probably cannot afford to have units.”
Shortly after ISW published its analysis, Robotyne fell to Ukraine.
