Escorts has been chosen to supply 1430 units of its premium range of powerful Farmtrac tractors to Tanzania which is implementing a national “Food Sufficiency Programs” aimed at making it a Food surplus country.
Escorts Limited, India’s leading tractor manufacturer, set a new benchmark by winning Indian tractor industry’s largest ever order for tractors. Valued at US $ 40 million (about Rs. 185 Cr) the prestigious order has been awarded to Escorts by the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania.

Escorts has been chosen to supply 1430 units of its premium range of powerful Farmtrac tractors to Tanzania which is implementing a national “Food Sufficiency Programs” aimed at making it a Food surplus country. Against global average of 19.7 tractors per 1000 hectare of land, Tanzania is estimated to have about 2 tractors per 1000 hectare of land. The tractors are being procured by Tanzania to impart a major thrust to farm mechanization and enhance agricultural productivity.

Rajan Nanda, Chairman, Escorts Limited said, “We strongly believe that farm mechanization holds the key to greater food security. Escorts powered the green revolution in India and we are privileged to support the national efforts to usher in the green revolution in Tanzania. Escorts will commence the supply of tractors in July. Escorts will supply the tractors in SKD (semi knocked down) form and assist the Government organizations in Tanzania to assemble these tractors into CBU (completely built-up units). Escorts’ Farmtrac range comprises from 34HP to 75 HP and has powerful features that provide maximum productivity and efficiency to the farmers.

talk about waste of tax payers money on projects that have no sense of direction. Juzi mbolea zimeibiwa ebu kwanza waseme kumekuwa na improvement gani so far under the scheme(watanzania wamefaidika vipi) ama ndio amna experiments before investing. Kutokana na mfano mmoja wamenufaisha vipi maisha ya watu au ndio matrekta yaje yaishie kuibiwa tu na kutoweka kama mbolea.

Kilimo kwanza what next (kipi kinafuata) or what is this idea going to achieve at the end considering the ambitious scale. Five years down the line it would prove to be a waste of tax payers fund, honestly this needs to stop.

At over US $ 27,000/= per tractor these would be the most expensive tractors ever imported into Tanzania. The same Escort tractors in India are selling at US$8,000/= to US $ 16,000/= per tractor complete with a set of implements and depending on the horse power rating. Escort tractors are in the 25 to 75 hp range. All am wondering is, as Tanzanians we are so ambitious and eager to buy what others have manufactured and at the same time we seldom sell anything. Where do we get the money? When are we going to change this mentality? Has it ever occurred to us that we could otherwise manufacture things we are importing today as we have the land, labor and market? Sometimes I get tempted to think tumelogwa hivi, we have been bewitched kwa kweli!
