Kenyan MPs award themselves Sh 2bn in secret deal....President Kibaki rejects it!

That's y i keep insisting that Kenyans mean business that we Tanzanians do. Had it been that it were in Tanzania, Mr Sinbad would accepted and ultimately signed it the bill!!!

Kuna wakati ilisemekana wabunge waongezewa posho na sijui mswada huo ulikwenda vipi. kwa viongozi wa tanzania miswada ya kuongeza posho hupitishwa rahisi. peoples power vipi?

Demonstrators marched through Nairobi’s capital today to protest another attempt by Kenyan lawmakers to boost their pay, after it emerged the officials had voted for a $25 million bonus for when they leave office.

In a quiet amendment added to the Finance Bill late Thursday, members of Parliament approved a golden handshake of $110,000 each to be paid after their term ends early next year....Read MORE »

Kibaki rejects MPs' Sh2bn send-off pay

The President objected to the amendment on the grounds that it was first unconstitutional and secondly untenable in the prevailing economic circumstances in the country. Photo|FILE|NATION MEDIA GROUP

any president would have done just the same and kibaki just proved to kenyans that he's still intact upstairs.

I personaly dont believe that Kibaki deserve any praise for doing his job. Are we are so used to people not doing their jobs that when some one does what we pay them to do we look upon it as a miracle?! Dont get me wrong I am not saying that people should not be praised for doing good, I just dont think this culture of Mheshimiwa, excellency and the uplifting of individuals that we have is "good for our health".

Let me point something out though. While everybody was busy condemning the perks the MP's gave to themselves
(which i believe was illegal and the courts would have trown out in my oppinion - IANAL )
They managed to alter the electoral laws and extended the period for party hopping to January 4, 2013. there was also another amendment, which I cannot confirm if it was passed for now, that mandated that any proposals by the salaries and renumeration comision must be approved by parliament thus rendering the body useless.

I believe that the later changes are what the Mp's wanted all along and the perks was just a diversion. People got so focused on the money, they did not even see them steal the bank!

Yesterday people demonstrated, and some are still planning to demonstrate on Saturday, occupy parliament will be the slogan and hopefully we will manage to kick the thugs out of parliament come 2013. A people's revolution is in the making, we are just waiting for the leaders.
Safi sana and I wish the people well. I just came across this list of the dudes who voted but word is that all MPs had agreed to this thing even those yelling the loudest now.

Exactly, Kibaki just did what the masses expected and looked upon him to do. MPs are robbers and they are used to doing this and actually getting away. This time it is a NO even if they try to blackmail the president. We have credible courts now who will not hesitate to dispense justice.

Our youths have no jobs yet a few greedy individuals who like to enrich themselves from national coffers on a daily basis. What a shame.

I am pretty sure after kibaki's depature, there is a group of people who are ready to paint and potray him and all his achievements in caricatures. And these are the same people who run around painting walls at night. The biggest problem like a cancer kenyans are struggling with is partisanship. The other fatal equivalent cancer is clanism and nepotism.

....It is on record kenya speaker of parliament had advocated for mps raising their salaries, that "amazingly" did not recieve much publicity.. I am against mps raising or awarding themselves hefty sendoff perks..it is also shocking that such comments can come up at such a time.

It is equally shocking that no one has stood up in defiance of rampant corruption in NHIF where looting of public money has happened and yet these are the same peoples that outwardly potray themselves as sanctified to bring the so desired leadership that Kenya urgently needs. It is just a matter of time till we see concerned people come out on the open to condemn looting of public money.

Salaries team wants to chop MPs' wages

In Summary

  • Those to be affected include MPs, permanent secretaries and members of constitutional commissions.
  • The new salary scale, which will lead to a big drop in the government wage bill, will be unveiled before December after the SRC completes a job evaluation exercise.
  • The pay cuts will be effected to ensure equity in the salaries and allowances of government workers.

Members of Parliament are among top public servants facing a major salary cut if the team set up to determine the pay for government workers has its way.

The Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SCR) is reviewing salaries of public officers in a move that may rattle many of those already enjoying huge perks.

Those to be affected include MPs, permanent secretaries and members of constitutional commissions.

The new salary scale, which will lead to a big drop in the government wage bill, will be unveiled before December after the SRC completes a job evaluation exercise.

The pay cuts will be effected to ensure equity in the salaries and allowances of government workers, SRC vice-chairman Daniel Ogutu and commissioner Isaiah Kubai said on Wednesday.

"We will be coming up with a new salary structure for State officers based on a scientifically accepted method. This will help in proper planning and budgeting," Mr Ogutu said.

The review, Mr Kubai added, will help to harmonise pay to ensure fairness in compensation of government workers.

"Salaries at the top will decrease so that we can pay those at the bottom who are currently not very well compensated," he said.

Kenyan MPs, who have been determining their own pay before the SRC was set up, are among the best paid in the world.

Their latest attempt to award themselves a huge Sh2 billion send-off package, where each would have pocketed Sh9 million, flopped after President Kibaki rejected it following widespread public outcry. (READ:

President Kibaki warned that the country could not afford the colossal perks the MPs had awarded themselves by way of a severance package.

MPs monthly earning - both basic salary and allowances - stand at Sh850,000 while some PSs and members of constitutional commissions draw over Sh1 million in salaries and allowances.

"All state officers will be interviewed including the President so as to develop acceptable, rationalised, harmonised, defensible and equitable grading structure," said the SRC vice-chairman.

PriceWaterhouseCoopers has been contracted to carry out the evaluation of jobs created by the Constitution and categorised as State jobs.

The evaluation is aimed at harmonising salaries paid to State and public officers in about 90 different jobs in the public service.

Kwa kweli sikumsikia. Huenda alipinga kinafiki
