[h=3]Over 500 Banks Tap The ECB For 500 Billion Euros[/h]

We all knew that the problems in Europe were massive. You literally had to be hiding in a cave for the last year and a half if you didn't know that Europe had fiscal issues that have the potential to break-up the zone. Just how big the problems lying under the surface though will probably never really be known until its too late but the recent borrowing of European banks from Europe's Central Bank should start to give us clues as to just how massive the underlying problem really is.

Today we got news that more than 500 banks tapped into the European Central Bank's facility to help troubled banks and borrowed upwards of approximately 500 Billion Euros, taking advantage of the cheap 3 year loans put in place to help stabilize the banks. Again, at the risk of sounding like a broken record, I find it comical that debt issues are tackled with more debt.

Tens of thousands of protesters from across Spain gathered in Madrid to decry austerity measures enacted by the government. Activists accused leaders of "destroying" Spain with brutal program cuts and tax hikes, aimed at avoiding an EU bailout.

Some 50,000 protesters converged in waves in the center of the Spanish capital, blowing whistles and waving banners that read, "they are destroying the country, we must stop them." Representatives from over 230 civic and professional organizations also turned out to express anger at the new measures, amid cries of "lies!" and "enough!"

Demonstrators called for a referendum to decide whether the unpopular public sector cuts instated by Mariano Rajoy's government should continue.

"It's a drastic reduction in the quality of service for patients, it's terrible," he said, adding that his own salary had shrunk by about 30% because of the austerity measures.

But the government of Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy insists that the cuts are necessary to save the eurozone's fourth largest economy.

"These sacrifices are absolutely unavoidable if we are to correct the difficult economic climate we are experiencing," Economy Minister Luis de Guindos said.

"We are laying the foundations for a recovery," he added.
