Iranian ambassador to Tanzania Abbas Vaezi has challenged President Jakaya Kikwete, who currently chairs the African Union, to do something to end Israel attacks on the Palestinian people.

He also criticised Western countries for supporting Israel, which he called a terrorist state.

The envoy threw the challenge during an exclusive interview with The Guardian in Dar es Salaam ahead of today`s commemoration of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein, the grandson of the holy Prophet of Islam. Imam Hussein and his followers Karbala died at war at Karbala in Iraq in 680 AD.

Just like what the AU did during the Lebanon war, which pitted Hezbollah and the government, it should do something, at least sending troops to the region.

He said Iran was supporting Hesbollah and Hamas liberation groups that are fighting for their land spiritual. He called Israel a terrorist state, adding that America was supporting the ``terrorists``.

He said the people of Iran are giving out whatever humanitarian aid they could to support their oppressed and suffering brethren of Palestine. ``We are praying for them and giving them every kind of support,`` said Dr Vaezi.

He said Iran was negotiating with Egypt so that a hospital could be established near the border of the two countries so as to offer medical services to the injured, and was waiting for a response from Egypt.

Unfortunately, Egypt is currently being criticized by Islamic countries for having closed its border, making it difficult for Palestinians to flee the war into Egypt, he said.

``It is sad. We are negotiating with Egypt to observe the situation and give them support,`` said the ambassador.

Commenting on Africa`s silence over the issue, Dr Vaezi said Libya, which is in the Security Council, was doing something.

He commended Tanzania whose President, Jakaya Kikwete for sending a message to condemn Israel for attacking Gaza.

``Africa participated in the peace process in Lebanon sometime and so they need to participate in this issue as well.

Asia, North America also needs to get involved because this is a human disaster where defenseless people are getting killed,`` the ambassador said.

He added: “The solution as we have said several times should be following a democratic process.

All homeless Palestinians should be allowed to come home and participate in one referendum through a one man one vote.``

Dr Vaezi that was not being done because ``they know Israel will lose and America and western countries will lose their illegitimate interest in the Middle East.

They are bombarding and killing people to serve their interests. This kind of behaviour is unjustifiable.``
