Dar es Salaam. Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda yesterday called on Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) members of parliament to bury their differences and work as a team.
He said doing so would make them cope with challenges the party was likely to face in the tenth parliament. He warned the ruling party legislatures that the current parliament was more tasking than the previous one; hence the need for close cooperation among them. Mr Pinda was speaking when he officiated the opening of a three-day sensitization seminar for CCM legislators in Dar es Salaam.
It is important to note that the type of parliament we have now calls for close cooperation among ourselves so as to be able to withstand strong waves from the opposition. It is high time we burry our differences within the party, he advised them.Observers say that this could be a warning sign in the wave of persistent wrangles among party members concerning serious issues of national interest. CCM has been embroiled in another crisis, with a sharp split emerging over a government plan to pay nearly Sh94 billion in compensation to the controversial private emergency power generating company, Dowans. The observers say the bickering within CCM was a serious threat to its government. They argue that a serious power struggle was underway in the party that has ruled the country for over 50 years. The Prime Minister also urged ministers to be more active in the next parliament, telling them: You should always be present in parliament sessions to answer questions. We are tired of the trend where questions are raised on the flour but there is no minister to answer. He said the ministers should always respond to arising matters on time and save the public from unnecessary speculation. To be able to cope with the present political turbulence in parliament, he urged MPs to read a lot and carry out thorough research on specific issues before presenting them to the house. Mr Pinda said an MP is judged by the public basing on how he/she presents or defends motions in parliament. But he was quick to note that eloquence and seriousness in parliament ought to be reflected in constituencies as well. The premier, who doubles as the chairman of CCM Members of Parliament Committees, also urged the MPs to utilize the on-the-spot question session for the Prime Minister during parliament sessions. He said opposition MPs outperformed their CCM counterparts in the last parliament.
The three-day seminar was organized by the national assembly to familiarize new legislatures on party policies. Other political parties, according to the prime minister, will also hold similar seminars. Mr Pinda emphasised that the occasion would not be used to evaluate party performance in the last general election, but to familiarize new MPs with both house and party regulations.
