The Ministry of Lands, Housing and Human Settlements Development has warned over the existence of several editions of fake map of Tanzania used by various local and international entities for different purposes.

Speaking to reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday the Director of Survey and Mapping Dr Selassie Mayunga said government officials have teamed up with the police to launch investigation leading to the arrest of all those involved in the production of such fake maps.

Mayunga said the fake map shows misleading features especially Tanzania boarders, adding that it is prepared by industries and companies within and outside Tanzania.

“There is an increase of fake production of map of Tanzania which is later used in public institutions for various advertisements and publications of these institutions,” he added

The director warned that with effect from yesterday no one is allowed to publish, distribute or use the map of Tanzania in any publication without the permission from the ministry.

He said the ministry will work with the police in ensuring that distribution of all editions of the fake map stops while continuing investigations to identify the source of the production and distribution of the editions.

The director noted that the ministry has prepared a new map of Tanzania, calling on all municipal councils to make sure that no fake map of Tanzania.

The original map of the country which is issued by the Ministry has the copyright of the country at the bottom side. According to the director the fake map has no such copyright.

The director further noted that the increasing land conflicts are due to bad land mapping, cautioning officials found causing land conflicts by ignoring the procedure would be terminated from their jobs as a punishment.

He expressed concern that although map experts know the law and steps governing land mapping they intentionally disregard them, which in the end results in land conflicts observed in various parts of the county.

For that reason, Mayunga said, every land mapping officer will now be accountable for land conflicts that will arise following their action. The step was being taken to ensure an end land conflicts in Tanzania, he added.

Yesterday the Ministry of Lands held a meeting in Dar es Salaam under the Survey and Mapping Director, attended by survey and map experts, to discuss various challenges in their field and how to tackle them.
