Ghana minister faces media blackout over journalist attack

Ghana journalists have declared a media blackout on Fisheries Minister Mavis Hawa Koomson following an attack on a journalist.

The journalist, from a local radio station, was attacked early this month during a parliamentary vetting process of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Central Region.

The attackers wore T-shirts bearing Ms Koomson's name, according to the president of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour.

"We call for all media houses to give a total media blackout to Mavis Hawa Koomson and stay away from her, because we believe there are thugs around the MP who pose a threat to the lives of journalists and other media practitioners,” Mr Dwumfour said on Thursday.

Ms Koomson, who is a ruling party MP, denied any involvement in the incident, terming the accusations against her political.

The ruling party has condemned the media directive as unfair, saying none of the MP’s team members were involved in the attack.

The party has urged the GJA to conduct a more comprehensive investigation before drawing any conclusions.
