Sure, we need as many universities as we can afford, but have u troubled urself to study the infrastructure and quality of education offered by our Universities? I have worked at various higher learning institutions in TZ, the condition is more or less the same-poor, even our presently-famous-university. I thought we have learnt a lesson from Ward Secondary Schools results, it surely appears some haven't.It is sickening to note that in the year 2011 there are still so many ignorant Tanzanians who have no clue what the meaning of higher education is. What escaped the narrow-minded who decried the idea of addition of a prestigious university to Tanzania in general and to Katavi in particular is the concept behind it. A university is more than issuance of degrees. Degrees are more than what gives individuals licence to work in airconditioned offices in big cities like Dar es salaam. Show me a degree holder (in anything) who doesn't have anything to do, you will be showing me an ignorant buffoon who has wasted public funds in creating nothing more than a useless robot of self. Higher education is supposed to open your mind to a higher level of thinking, higher level of reasoning, it is supposed to make you more inquisitive, more imaginative, definitely self-sufficient and forward looking. It is extremely idiotic to surmise that if you have a degree then you have to have an office job. If that is your thinking, then I am not surprised that there so many ignorant Tanzanians who are quite contended to clean other peoples toilets in UK, America, etc rather than go back to their villages and do real respectable work. Looking at another aspect, the original author of this despicable blog (and those who supported it) is the fact that this person hails from a place where there are 5 or more institutions of higher education. The whole of Western Corridor has no such luxury! Therefore, you don't need standard 7 education to figure out why an institution of higher education is so invaluable to this part of grossly marginalised world. Remember,Tanzania has massive land which is yet to be exploited commercially. In the next 25 years we will need to produce in excess of 50,000 agriculturists annually to be anywhere near meeting the shortage of people with suffient skills to make use of our land. And if the idea of starting such an expensive university is politically motivated, so what? And who gives a toss? What is important in the end is getting something useful for once. After all, is that not why we have politicians? Any politician who leaves a legacy of something as important as a university should be praised by all even if you never had a chance to get no more than primary education yourself.
Some of us are of the opinion that instead of having thousands of universities, we can have a few that are adequately funded so that at the end of the day we can have graduates who actually have 'high-level of reasoning', among other things. You can not establish a university, only to have TAs as lecturers. TAs, Master's degree holders are (essentially) also students.Lectures are 4 PhD holders and professors. It is the quality that matters!
