Manny Pacquiao was unable rekindle the dominance of his prime, fading in the later rounds and losing via unanimous decision to Yordensis Ugas, who as a late replacement scored the most convincing victory of his career.
Ugas (27-4, 12 knockouts) retained his World Boxing Association title at 147 pounds, with two judges scoring it 116-113 and 115-113 at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas on Saturday night.
Pacquiao (69-8-2, 39 KOs), 42, had the crowd on its feet early, but Ugas controlled the bout starting in the sixth round, establishing his jab and landing to the body to keep his opponent on his heels.
Ugas, 35, originally was to fight on the undercard of Pacquiao-Errol Spence Jr., but was elevated to the main event after Spence was forced to withdraw because of a torn retina suffered during training camp.
“Hard time making adjustment in the ring about his style,” Pacquiao said during an in-ring interview. “That was a problem for me.”
Pacquiao did not announce his plans for the future, saying he wanted to rest when asked if he was planning to run for president of the Philippines. Pacquiao currently serves as a senator in his home country.
“That’s boxing,” Pacquiao said. “I want to congratulate Yordensis Ugas. Let’s face another tomorrow.”
