AU's dilemna and the Libyan crisis

Kitendo cha Kanali Gadafi kuwashambulia raia wake kwa mizinga na ndege za kijeshi ni kitendo cha aibu na kinatakiwa kipingwe na wapenda demokrasia wote.

Baada ya kuona wenzake wa Tunisia na Misiri wakiondolewa madarakani kwa nguvu za wananchi Gadafi aliamua kutumia nguvu zote za kijeshi alizonazo kuwalazimisha wananchi wake wasipate haki yao ya kikatiba ya kuchagua kiongozi wanayemtaka.
Kitendo hiki kingeruhusiwa kuendelea kingejenga precedence ya watawala wa kiafrika kutumia nguvu ya majeshi kuendelea kukaa madarakani, tumeshuhudia jinsi chaguzi nyingi Afrika zinavyovurugwa na majeshi kwa lengo la kuwalinda wanasiasa waliowapatia nafasi na wanaowarushia marupurupu yatokanayo na ukwapuaji wa rasilimali za nchi zao.

Kwa kuzuia mashambuliza ya anga na matumizi mengine ya ziada dhidi ya raia wa Libya napenda kuwapongeza viongozi wa USA, UK, Ufaransa na wengine wote wanaounga mkono nguvu za kijeshi kumzuia Gadafi kuwashambulia raia wake. Hii itasaidia sana ukuaji wa demokrasia Afrika kwani viongozi wengine ambao hawapendi kuona wakipingwa na wananchi wao kuogopa kushambuliwa pindi watakapotumia nguvu za kijeshi kuzuia wananchi hawa kutumia haki yao ya kidemokrasia kuwapinga (kuandamana).

Well I think it is time to question the Western Powers on how they can pick and choose which dictator to ambush and which one to baby sit.

I do not condone Gaddafi's and his regime decision to kill their own people, even though the western media gave him the "right" to do so by naming those civilians who were against Gaddafi as "rebels". we have seen Museveni destroying "rebels" in the north and no one did anything about it.

We have seen Mugabe killing his own people and displaced many but the Western Powers did nothing about it.

The sheikhs in Bahrain killed 30 protesters but the Western Powers did not see that.

Not to mention Bashir and the southern sudanese he slaughtered like chickens, yes the Western Powers decided to use the ICC against him but allowed him to continue killing his own people for a while.

So why Gaddafi and why now? If they are not careful that country will fall to the hands of even more sinister terrorists fully equipped with heavy weapons from the Libya's weapons stores and not to forget that the easy targets will be country like Italy which are so close to Libya.

I believe it is a mistake and something that has been decided without proper strategy.

The United Nations Security Council has rejected requests by the African Union (AU) High Level Ad-hoc Committee on Libya (AHCL) to fly to Tripoli to mediate between President Muammar Gaddafi and pro-democracy protesters fighting to end his 42-year rule.

A communiqué of the committee issued yesterday after its meeting in Mauritania said, The committee, in conformity with resolution 1973(2011) of the United Nations Security Council, requested for the required permission for the flight carrying its members to Libya in order to fulfill their mandate. The committee was denied permission.

Uganda ministers Sam Kutesa (Foreign Affairs) and Amama Mbabazi (Security), who represented President Museveni, were part of the delegation.
Ambassador James Mugume, the foreign affairs permanent secretary, said the committee would proceed with its mission once the international coalition is done with disabling Col. Gaddafis air defences.

The committee was formed on March 10 during a meeting of the AU Peace and Security Council in Addis- Ababa to stop the escalation of the Libyan crisis. The request to go to Libya was made on Saturday after a meeting in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

The ad-hoc team comprises AU Commission chairperson Jean Ping, Presidents Mohamed Ould Abdel Aziz of Mauritania (host), Dennis Sessou Ngueso (Republic of Congo), Amadou Toumani Toure (Mali), Jacob Zuma (South Africa) and Mr Museveni.
