Ex-United striker Manucho earns draw for Angola

January 3, 2010

African Nations Cup hosts Angola drew 1-1 against Gambia in their final warm-up match in Portugal on Sunday, the state-run Angop news agency reported.

Angola, who play in the tournament's opening game next Sunday against Mali in Luanda, had to come from behind after Ebrima Sawaneh gave the Gambians a fourth minute lead.

Former Manchester United striker Manucho, now playing club football in Spain, equalised in the 29th minute. The tournament runs from Jan 10-31.

Ghana captain John Mensah will miss this month's African Nations Cup finals after picking up a hamstring injury, the Ghana Football Association said on Friday. Mensah, who suffered the injury playing for Sunderland, joins fellow defender John Paintsil on the sidelines after the Fulham player twisted his knee last weekend.

Obafemi Martins has been declared fit and included in Nigeria's squad for the African Nations Cup finals in Angola, team officials said on Sunday. The striker had undergone fitness tests at the team's training camp in Durban, South Africa over the weekend before being named in coach Shaibu Amadou's 23-man squad.

Tottenham Hotspur defender Benoit Assou-Ekotto pulled out of Cameroon's squad for the African Nations Cup on Thursday with a groin injury that will sideline him for three weeks.

Chelsea midfielder Michael Essien should be fit to play for Ghana in the African Cup of Nations campaign next month, according to his club manager Carlo Ancelotti.

African Nations to go ahead

CAF defiant despite deadly gun attack

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has confirmed the African Cup of Nations will be staged as planned, despite Friday's deadly attack on the Togo team bus which killed the driver and left nine others wounded.

Togo's team bus was set upon by gunmen as they crossed the border from Congo-Brazzaville to the troubled province of Cabinda, with two players shot in the attack.

The armed front for the Liberation of the Enclave of Cabinda (FLEC) have claimed responsibility for the attack, which has cast doubts over whether the tournament will go ahead.

Souleymane Habuba, CAF's communications director, insisted that while his sympathies lied with the Togolese national side, the tournament would take place as planned.

"Our great concern is for the players, that's our key priority, but the championship goes ahead," he said.

"We need to know all the facts about what's happening on the ground, we haven't got them all yet. We can't give a full reaction from reports that we have got from the media."

Habuba went on to question why Togo, in contrast to the other 15 teams making their way to Angola for the tournament, had elected to travel by road rather than flying.

"CAF's regulations are quite clear, teams are required to travel by air, not road," he continued.
"We had a meeting of all the teams this morning, or at least almost all of them - Togo didn't show up, and it was only later on Friday afternoon that we heard via information from the media that they had been the victims of an attack.

"But at no point were we told they were travelling by road."

Fifa also released a statement speaking of their concern about the attack.

"FIFA and its President, Joseph S. Blatter, are deeply moved by today's incidents which affected Togo's national team, to whom they express their utmost sympathy," said the statement.

"FIFA is in touch with the African Football Confederation (CAF) and its President, Issa Hayatou, from which it expects a full report on the situation."

Sunday, the curtain will be drawn on the 27th Orange CAF Nations Cup final in Luanda Angola.while the Angolans will be expecting their team to make it to the final of the competition and even win the cup, the Malians are not under such a pressure and this suits them fine.

since october 10 2008 when they were eliminated from the first round of the CAN-Nations Cup qualifier, came out second of group 3 behind Benin, the angolans have not gotten involved in major competitions contending itself instead with friendly matches that have not really brought out the best in the team.in July, the authorities recriuited the Portuguese Manuel Jose hoping that his superlative showing with the Egyptian club Al Ahly will rub off on the team.

Under him the team played a total of nine matches, won two against Togo and Malta, drew six and lost one against Estonia on december 30 in Portugal where they were in camp. if the attack can be said not to be potent with seven goals, the defence can be credited with conceding just five goals.

Angola, world cup qualifiers in 2006 are loooking forward to another glorious dawn in their football, despite the pressure that goes with host countries.

The Eagles of Mali on the other hand, too long in the shadows of African football, are targetting this competition to satisfy the yearnings of a hungry country. so far the spanish based trio of Mahamadou Diara, Seydou Keita, Frederick Oumar Kanoute have not risen to the expectations of taking Mali to great heights.

it is hoped that unlike what happenned in 2008 when they had to bow out in a group involving Nigeria, Benin and Cote Divoire, this time around the memories of 1972, finalist and 1994 and 2002 semi finalist will push them even further.

meanwhile, the Malians are no strangers to opening matches. in 1994 they spoilt the party for host Tunisia when they won 2-0, and in 2002 before their public they rallied back through Seydou Keita to level a George Weah goal.

just back from a four nation playing tour against North Korea,Iran, and Qatar the Eagles lost 0-1 against the Pharaohs of Egypt.

all is set for a match that will also determine the preparedness of the host to organise the competition.
