Police in Kabale District have arrested two parents for allegedly conspiring with a traditional healer to sacrifice their nine-month-old baby, John Boso Mugabe, in circumstances that remain under investigation.
The suspects, identified as Wilber Turyatemba and Kyomukama Agnes, are residents of Bunagana Village, Mayengo Parish, Kamuganguzi Sub-county, Kabale District. They are being held at Kabale Central Police Station as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s death and establish whether other people were involved.
According to Kigezi Region Police spokesperson Nelson Tumushime, the incident reportedly occurred on October 16, 2026, at about 9am. Police, however, became aware of the matter after the baby’s uncle, Twinomugabe Deus, raised concern over the child’s whereabouts.
Police said Twinomugabe became suspicious on October 20 after meeting Kyomukama at Bunagana Trading Centre without the baby, whom she reportedly routinely carried on her back.
When Twinomugabe asked Kyomukama about the child, she allegedly told him that she had handed him over to a woman from Kabale town who was supposed to take care of him.
The explanation reportedly raised suspicion, prompting inquiries by relatives and other concerned people into the baby’s whereabouts. The inquiries later led to the discovery of the child’s body and the opening of a police investigation into the alleged murder.
Police said the baby’s body was retrieved from the scene and taken to the mortuary at Kabale Regional Referral Hospital, where a postmortem examination is expected to establish the cause of death.
SP Tumushime said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the child’s death, verify the allegations of a planned sacrifice and identify everyone suspected to have participated in the alleged crime.
The two suspects remain in police custody as investigators continue recording statements and gathering evidence. Police said further action would be taken based on the findings of the ongoing investigation.
