THE government has adopted Indian modal in using ICT and e-governance amid continued discussions with Rwanda to improve efficiency and meet sustainable development.
During his recent visit to Tanzania, Rwandan President Paul Kagame told his host John Magufuli that his country was ready to deploy a team of technical experts to help in the installation and coordination of the ICT service in the country.
But, addressing reporters in Dar es Salaam yesterday, E-Governance Agency (EGA) said the size of the population and the country was the key factors Tanzania had considered to opt for the Indian modal.
“The best country using ICT and e-governance is Korea. India has a large population almost similar to Tanzania and the level of poverty also looks alike to that of Tanzania,” said EGA Communications Manager Suzan Mshakangoto.
“We have opened up talks with Rwanda and soon we will sign a Memorandum of Understanding to facilitate the process,” she noted, announcing that about 72 government institutions, including ministries and independent institutions have all been connected to e-governance.
Additional 77 institutions under the President’s Office, Regional Administration and Local Governments, have been lined-up for connection. “We expect to complete the exercise by December and a roll out plan is expected to include some institutions shifting to the new designated capital, Dodoma,” said the manager.
The institutions are connected through a Local Area Network (LAN) that allows dialing free calls from within the connected institutions.
The service is already available in 20 regions, the manager said, adding that the new service will reduce communication cost, improve efficiency and the quality of signal as all institutions will be under the same fiber network.
“We are expecting to connect all public institutions countrywide,” she said, assuring that the system is secure.
