The Truth About Michael Brown and the Ferguson Riots


Ferguson, Missouri (CNN) Michael Brown was shot at least six times, according to the preliminary results of a private autopsy that his family requested.

The independent autopsy was conducted by high-profile pathologist Michael Baden. Baden testified in the O.J. Simpson, Phil Spector and Drew Peterson murder trials.
Family attorney Daryl Parks did not provide additional details about the preliminary results.

However, the New York Times, reporting on the same independent autopsy, reported that two of the bullets struck Brown in the head. The other four struck him in the right arm -- and all six were fired into his front.

"This is bound to escalate tensions," the Rev. Jesse Jackson told CNN. "This is a very provocative report."

Even before the release of this latest information, the St. Louis suburb of Ferguson has been a racially charged tinderbox.
Clashes once again

Late Sunday night, a day of peaceful protests devolved into a night of gunfire, Molotov cocktails and tear gas .

Officers fired tear gas into a crowd of hundreds of protester, including children, who were marching toward a police command post despite an impending midnight curfew. Authorities also struck at least one defiant protester with rubber bullets.

St. Louis County police said several protesters had thrown Molotov cocktails toward the officers before authorities shot tear gas toward them.
The violence escalated through the night as shots were fired toward police. Officers had to take up a defensive position behind vehicles.

"That is a lie. It was no fight, it was no shots fired," a very upset protester, Lisha Williams, told CNN. "The only ones who fired was police. All we did was march to the command center to fall to our knees and say, 'Don't shoot.' And they started shooting."
The scene was a far cry from a packed church earlier Sunday, where hundreds of people gathered for a two-hour rally demanding justice for Michael Brown, an unarmed black teenager shot dead eight days ago by a white police officer.

"I'm astonished at this reversal of mood," Jackson said. "The mood was so positive."

Cousin: Brown killed without reason
A cousin of Brown told the church audience that Brown was killed without reason.
"What I want y'all to remember is that Michael Brown was not just some young black boy. He was a human being ... ," Ty Pruitt said. "He was not a suspect. He was not an object. He was not an animal. But that's how he was killed."

Michael Brown's parents -- Lesley McSpadden and Michael Brown Sr. -- appeared on stage at the rally at Greater Grace Church with attorney Benjamin Crump but didn't address the audience.

"What we're really asking for is simple justice," Crump said. "We're not asking for anything extraordinary. They just want what anybody else would want if their children were shot down in broad daylight."

Crump said there would be an independent investigation in addition to the federal and local probes already under way.

Missouri State Highway Patrol Capt. Ron Johnson spoke to the 1,300 people in the congregation and said he had a heavy heart.

"The past 24 hours have been tough for me," said Johnson, who took over security in the town on Thursday after what many saw as an overly aggressive police response by the local authorities. Johnson said he met with members of the Brown family and was moved to tears.

Protests had turned violent on Saturday night as well after a curfew began. One male was shot overnight Saturday, authorities said. It was unclear how old he was or who shot him. The victim was in critical condition Sunday.

Officials said state highway patrol officers didn't fire any shots. They did fire tear gas to get to the wounded victim, Johnson said early Sunday.

A third autopsy

Brown was shot to death August 9 by a police officer after a confrontation as the teen walked down the street. Accounts of exactly what happened when Officer Darren Wilson stopped Brown vary widely.

Witnesses said they saw a scuffle between the officer and Brown at the police car before the young man was shot. Police said Brown struggled with the officer and reached for his weapon.

Several witnesses said Brown raised his hands and was not attacking the officer.
U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder has approved another autopsy on Brown's body, the Justice Department said. The autopsy will be conducted by a federal medical examiner.

US Attorney General Eric Holder has met the parents of Michael Brown, the black teenager who was killed by police in Ferguson, Missouri last week.
Earlier, he met officials and toured the town talking to local residents.
Mr Holder has promised a "full, fair and independent" investigation into the killing of Mr Brown, 18, who was unarmed when he was shot.
His death sparked 10 nights of often violent clashes between police and demonstrators.
On Wednesday night, protestors again gathered on the streets of Ferguson, but police said the violence had largely abated since the night before.
Community leaders have continued to appeal for calm and healing.
'Inflaming tensions' In an open letter published in the St Louis Post-Dispatch on Tuesday, Mr Holder said that the justice department "will defend the right of protesters to peacefully demonstrate".
However, he added that "violence cannot be condoned" and urged Ferguson residents to condemn "the actions of looters, vandals and others seeking to inflame tensions and sow discord".
He said violent acts had been committed by "a very small minority, in many cases individuals from outside Ferguson".
Reports suggest that Mr Holder is considering opening a broader investigation into policing in Ferguson in general, following several allegations of police misconduct.
The New York Times reports that under Mr Holder, the justice department has ordered more than twice as many such department-wide investigations as before.
Heavy-handed Mr Holder also met students at a local college
Many local residents have demanded that Officer Darren Wilson, who shot the 18-year-old Michael Brown on 9 August, should be arrested and prosecuted. He has been placed on administrative leave with pay.
Witnesses have said Mr Brown was shot as he held his hands up in a position of surrender, while the police and supporters of Mr Wilson have said he fired during a fight with Mr Brown.
The police response, flooding the town with hundreds of officers in riot gear, has been criticised as heavy-handed.
Authorities were also criticised for not being transparent enough in the immediate aftermath of the shooting.
The St Louis County prosecutor's office said it would present evidence against Mr Wilson to a grand jury on Wednesday.
The jury will determine whether or not to charge him with a crime.
A group of protesters gathered in front of the courthouse on Wednesday, chanting, praying and holding up signs urging the county prosecutor to step aside in this case, as a line of police officers stood guard over the main door.
Missouri Governor Jay Nixon has said he would not seek Bob McCulloch's removal.
Both St Louis officials and the US justice department are conducting investigations into the case, which has provoked demonstrations throughout the country.
Protests subdued Police in Ferguson said they arrested 47 people on Tuesday night following a largely peaceful protest.

Missouri Highway Patrol Capt Ron Johnson, who has led the police response since Thursday, said that the protest began without trouble but that during the night some protesters threw bottles of water and urine at police.
"As of 01:00 (06:00 GMT), we have 47 arrests," he said.
However, he stressed that police had not been fired upon and that they did not use tear gas on protesters. "Tonight we saw a different dynamic," he said.
"Tonight the elders in this community, volunteers, activists and the clergy came out in large numbers. They walked, they talked with people. They urged order and common peace," Capt Johnson said.
The relative calm is in contrast to Monday night's violence when Capt Johnson said police came under "heavy gunfire" and responded with tear gas and stun grenades.
This was despite the deployment of National Guard units in the town on Monday.

The police shot another black man on Tuesday in St Louis, in an incident many feared could exacerbate the tension in Ferguson.
He was suspected of robbery, and had approached them brandishing a knife. The second shooting has so far had little or no impact on the protests in Ferguson.

Dhana ya ubaguzi inakuja baada ya kaangalia namna askari huyo alivyo act na kosa lilofanyika. Angemkamata tuu kwa Njia ambayo iko reasonable hoja ya ubaguzi isingekuwa na mashiko.

Hoja ya Ubaguzi haina msingi. Kwanini tusifikiri kuwa huyo askari alikuwa na hasira kali na wezi? kama ambavyo kuna watanzania wengi wenye hasira kali na wezi kiasi cha kuwachoma hata moto, japo ni kinyume cha sheria. Haiwezekani watu waandamane barabarani kutetea heshma ya mwafrika kisa eti mwizi wa kiafrika kauwawa na askari wa kizungu. Ni bora wangeandamana kupinga Askari kuua mwizi kinyume cha sheria, lakini sio kuhusisha uafrika hapo, wanatutia aibu maana wizi si moja ya sifa za mwafrika.
