Singida Urban Member of Parliament Mohamed Dewji
Singida Urban Member of Parliament Mr Mohamed Dewji has been named as Young Global Leader (YGL) by the World Economic Forum in its 2012 edition.
Mr Dewji, who is also the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Mohamed Enterprises Limited (METL), is the only Tanzanian to be given the honour this year. The YGL class of 2012 is composed of 192 individuals from 59 countries drawn from all sectors of society such as business, civil society, social entrepreneurs, politics and government, arts and culture, and opinion and media.
The new class comes from East Asia (38), South Asia (19), Europe (46), Middle East and North Africa (15), sub- Saharan Africa (18), North America (37) and Latin America (19). "I am grateful to the World Economic Forum for giving me this honour, as a Young Global Leader, I can inspire and assist more youths in Tanzania to fulfill their dreams for a sustainable future," said Mr Dewji.
Born in Singida in 1975, Dewji went to International School of Tanganyika before moving to the USA for High School Diploma in 1992. It was at Saddlebrook High School in Florida where he first exhibited signs of leadership by becoming the school's students' president.
Dewji then moved to Georgetown University in Washington DC where he majored in International Business and Finance and took a minor in theology. In 1998 he started working in the family business where he rose to key leadership positions within two years. In less than a decade his company had grown 12 folds employing more than 24,000 people.
In 2005, he was elected as a legislator and in 2007 was elected by the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) to seat in the National Executive Committee. He was re-elected as a member of parliament in 2010. The Forum of YGL is a unique, multi-stakeholder community of more than 700 exceptional young leaders who share a commitment to shaping the global future.
All nominees must be below the age of 40. These young leaders are proposed through a qualified nomination process and assessed according to rigorous selection criteria that create a diverse and truly representative body, while accepting only the very best leaders who have already demonstrated their commitment to serving society.
YGL active members are involved in virtually all of the meetings, research and initiatives of the World Economic Forum, representing the views and interests of the next generation of leaders. YGL have a powerful role in determining the activities of the YGL Community, which is governed by a Foundation Board and managed by a small team in Geneva.
