Members of Parliament have secretly increased their take-home allowances by 60 per cent to cater for rising costs of living, Daily Monitor can reveal.
The increase, which was sneaked through the corridors of Parliament a month ago, is significantly higher than the five per cent salary increment offered to civil servants this financial year.
Confidential leads obtained by this newspaper, indicate that the endorsement was made after MPs reportedly pressurised the Parliamentary Commission to sanction the proposal without support from officials in the Ministry of Finance and the Secretary to the Treasury.
